Crankshaft sensor.

Just wondering, what causes a crankshaft position sensor to go bad, it looks to be a magnet with some wires? it doesn't seem like anything can wear out in it and magnets last for thousands of years.

Are these not a composit type magnet that are held in by adhesive? Oil, heat and age could cause the problem with the composit and adhesive? If they were steel magnets held in by bolts you would probably be right. Can anyone confirm the make-up of these magnets?
