Turbo blues

Hi everyone,

I had my 2.2 89' rebuilt by a local shop . The car sat for about a year before the rebuild. When I got the car back, the turbo was bearly working. The mechanic told me since it sat at the beach, it was rusted and tight and needed to be run...give it 1000 miles...Well it did improve, but it doesn't do much on the top end gears and it is generaly intermitent at best. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Luke

Hi Luke,

I hear that upgrading or swapping the SMEC can do wonders! I'd make sure your tranny is in good order, assuming you have a T-II/3Spd Auto.

Yes , it is a 3 speed automatic and it hasn't given me any trouble. Are you saying the swap will put more strain on the trans?

Get a cheap boost gauge to check the boost in higher rpm's. I assume you can hear the turbo spooling when you wind out the engine. The Mitsu turbo runs out of spunk at higher rpms also. It is quicker spooling but what can you say?

If you had new rings and bearings done, that would have been the time for the better turbo.

My interest is peaked about upgrading the performance of my car...but I guess I would first be happy just to get back where the car was before the engine job. It's nowhere near that. I only hear the turbo in first gear and the engine has a trerrible whine at idle..I'm assuming thats the turbo? Sorry I'm not much of a mechanic yet but I'm starting to get a picture here..

If I were to guess, I'd say you camshaft is a tooth off on the belt. With some really basic hand tools you could check it... You will need a service manual for the procedure unless another list member here wants to do that much typing Also, do you have a timing light? I'd check that too.

Willhelm, all 8V TC's are Garrett turbo's, at least every one I've ever worked on...

One more thing is your catalytic convertor may have finally bought the farm especially if your 'old' engine was running poorly for an extended length of time. They can totally block off and the excess back pressure in the exhaust system leads to very poor performance. I'd be willing to bet it's one of these things or a combonation of them

AwHa Alan, your post helped me realize what kept escaping me about bigluke123's problem, tell me if I'm totally wrong but if his car sat for a year at the beach he might have a seafood dinner that crawled up his tail pipe during that time or perhaps something not quite so apealing but the same result. His exhaust could be severly blocked by the critters that made his exhaust system their home. Crabs anyone?

Um, we don't have crabs like that on this coast, they sound pretty scary...

There was an article in yesterday's paper, a couple local guys got a 'lung fluke' parasite from eating raw crabs at a local Sushi bar. Seems they are on 'display' in a bowl to be cooked into the Tempura. After way too many beers there was some goading and betting going on... One of the guys is near death now

BTW, that car sat for a year, I missed that part. Add a fuel pump/filter to my list of suspects...

Thanks for all your input guys...I'll get on some of these ideas I can check myself and see if I can wake it up...Any TC Guru in So Cal interested in a trade out?

Not sure what you mean by trade out but somehow I got the impression that you were an east coaster. If you are in So Cal and want to bring your TC to the next SD/TD meeting, I'll check the cam timing/fuel pressure/plugged cat scenario for you. We meet at Applebees, 1238 Imperial Hwy, La Habra, CA about 8pm always on the first Thursday of the month. Park on the Washington Mutual Bank side with the other FWD Chryslers/Dodges. If I am digging around underhood for you, try to be 1/2hour early and pop the hood so it will cool a bit before I check fuel pressure. Hot exhaust/turbocharger and spilled fuel are bad partners... If I get my hands dirty, it'll cost you dinner

Alan, Very nice offer...I will try and poke around under the hood before then but I sure would appreciate you looking at it (Dinner on me). If you need a vacation before then, come out to Ventura for a weekend...you can stay on my sailboat and I'll take you sailing or I'll take you fishing out to the Channel Islands in trade.

Hmm, the Dorado and Yellowtail are biting lately... Sounds like you are living right!

Let me know if you need more info on the meeting, (fingers crossed) I should have my TC there after a long hiatus for shiny new go fast parts
