Guest CaptainBristol Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 My '50 288 runs very well but with has one annoying problem: after it warms up it stalls at stop signs. A typical scenario has me cruising along a superhighway at 60+. Then I hit an offramp and slow to a stop at the sign. Almost invariablly, she stalls. I don't think it's vapor lock, because this happens regardless of whether I am running my auxiliary electric fuel pump. Also, it happens when the ambient temperature is cold, cool, or warm. Finally, the engine is not showing any signs of overheating. The engine runs well at idle when she's warming up and (mostly) when I'm driving in city traffic, stopping at lights, with the traffic, and at intersections. The problem really is most noticeable after driving at sustained speeds and then stopping. Any suggestions for a remedy would be welcome! All the best,Mark in Alaska.
Guest Albert Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Do you have an automatic transmission? can be the torque converter clutch not unlocking, try putting it in netural before comming to a stop and see what happens..
Guest imported_Speedster Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I would suspect the Choke valve on Carb. It may not be staying open enough at Idle, when engine is hot. When at higher RPM the engine vacuum will pull it open but then it may be swinging shut too much at Idle with low vacuum to keep it open. It's easy to tell if choke is open or closed at idle, by removing air cleaner. With hot engine it should be open almost all the way.
Guest imported_PackardV8 Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Next time it stalls, jump out, raise the hood and take a sniff to determine if there is a gasoline smell present. If so, then the carb bowl vent is plugged up.
Guest CaptainBristol Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll do as Speedster and PackardV8 suggested. The car has a manual transmission, so no worries about the torque converter clutch.
