novaman Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I'm not an authority on the plates but do question 1950 being a single tag in NY, because for my '49 Willys, I believe, I had a pair of 1948 tags with the '49 corner tag. (Last time I laid my hands on them was 19 years ago when I moved here from NY) Just can't believe they went back to a single tag. I'll have to dig them out of Dad's garage tomorrow.
oldford Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I know my 64 1/2 Mustang had one plate. Black with gold letters. 1965 added a red tape strip to the single black plate. Not sure about other years.
1937hd45 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 These guys should have the needed information.http://www.alpca.org/
Guest leadsled1953 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 1950 is a single plate year in ny because my desoto is registered with a single plate.to register a vintage plate in ny you have to submit a pic of the plates[or plate] to dmv and have historical insurance.1949 is 2 plate year.i called dmv[albany custom plates div] when i got the plate and they told me that 1950 was a single plate only year.1964 /1965 is a single plate year but i'm not sure what other years are.
Guest leadsled1953 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 a lot of the single plate years had to do with world war 2 and the korean war.
1937hd45 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">a lot of the single plate years had to do with world war 2 and the korean war. </div></div>Two years ago I photographed a barn in New York state that had two walls shingled in license plates. Owner went to the DMV at the end of the year in the 1930's and got all the unissued plates. Looked nice seeing that many plates all nailed up in sequence. None were worth saving and the barn was leveled for McMansion expansion. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Guest Randy Berger Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Pennsyltucky is just as bad - maybe worse. What a crappy plate! It's even worse than their "You've Got a Friend in Pa" plate. Some dumb clerk who knew nothing about cars came up with this "clever" plate.
EJ_Nostalgia Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 I actually vend at local car shows with NY plates for re-registration. Single plate years are as follows with corner tags being noted as such:1942-1947195019531954 (tag)19551956 (tag)19641965 (cellophane sticker on 64 plate)All other years not mentioned are pairs. If you need any plates, let me know.John
Guest Chip645 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Hello, John...All the years you list as "single plate" are war years except 1964-1965.There were covert "advisers" creeping around the Viet Nam jungles back then, but the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution wasn't until August of that year.Do you have any idea WHY '64 and '65 were "single-plate" years?I've busted my butt for a couple of hours trying to "Google" the answer, but no joy so far...
Guest Chip645 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 OK, maybe part of the answer is hidden in plain sight...I kept reading past the bit about "NY WORLD’S FAIR" being embossed on those plates...Did that have some bearing on the issue? After all, the '39-'40 World's Fair was held in N.Y., too...They were similarly embossed. Why aren't THEY listed as single-plate years?
Guest Chip645 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 'Sorry to go on like this, but the Korean war went from June of '50 to July of '53.Did the single-plate year in '50 have anything to do with the build-up to the war? What was the story with '53-'54 and '55-'56?
