I just brought in a rough, rotted '60 Cadillac ragtop. I know they used the engine number for a serial number and did not share the stamped tag the other GM makes use. But I have not been able to locate the cowl tag, which would have the body style number and codes for paint and interior colors, accessory codes, etc. The car's hood has not been opened in a long time and there is a lot of rust flakes and dirt in that area, but what I was able to get to a tag did not turn up.

It would save me a lot of time to know just where to look for this tag, if they even use one on these cars. I'd appreciate if someone could let me know, or post a photo showing the tag on another '60 Cadillac. Thanks.

Pontiac 59,

There should be a Fisher Body tag on the driver side of the cowl in the engine compartment. When you open the hood it is just inside behind the hinge (hope that makes sense). It should be riveted in place - perhaps there is so much rust, leaves, junk accumulated over the years that you didn't see it originally. If you still want I can take a pic when I get home tonight. I have a particular affinity for rusted 1960 Cadillac convertibles. Interested in selling yours?

The other tag which you probably know was screwed to the jamb below the striker in the driver's door opening. Often those were removed during a repaint or just painted over. That number should correspond to your title.

Good luck. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Actually it's on eBay now, I brought it home purely to flip given the yard it came from is being scrapped out and I can't afford to outright buy all of the cars that aught to be saved out of there. I guarantee it's the most rusted car you've ever seen in your life, all it's good for is a parts donor for a coupe conversion of a 59 or 60. (title? what's that?? heh)

I found out the tag on 1960 is in the middle of the body, and in checking old eBay auctions I found another '60 ragtop that sold a while back which seems to confirm it. I will probably just saw out the middle of the rear hood bracing to expose it; the hinges do move but it's going to take some seafoam or kroil to get them working again.

The hood is in two pieces, about 3" of seam holds the skin on still, between dirt and rust flakes there's like half an inch of junk in the hood channel, which is why I didn't find the tag.

Unfortunately I also found that my price may be on the high side, given what the other one sold for and mine makes it look like a brand new car, but the parts on it are pretty decent. Plus the tag will show a red interior; the other car was green on green. So who knows.
