Guest imported_Fox W. Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I've read that people say to use a coil pack from a 94' Park Avenue. Does this look right:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-GM-OE...sspagenameZWD1VThanks.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Close, but not quite. You need the entire assembly with all the coils and the base. This auction is for individual coils. But, an assembly from a '94 Park Avenue will do fine (and interchanges with like all '91+ 3800s)
Guest imported_Fox W. Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Ok, I have a 1989, if that matters. So is it only a 94 park Ave, or are there other years that have good compatible coils? Also, is this the correct Accel one?http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Accel-140...sspagenameZWD1VIf so, would that be equal to or better than the Delco one in the Park ave? Thanks.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 I'm using that Accel coil myself. Dunno how it exactly compares with the Delco, but haven't had problems with it for over a year.Park Avenue is not the only vehicle. You can pick from like any 3800 powered car from 1991 up to like 2004, maybe newer. Anywhere in between. Monte Carlo, Lesabre, Eighty Eight, whatever. I've been using "'94 Park Avenue" as the car to tell a junkyard though.
Guest MauiWowee Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 It doesn't get any better than that. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Richard S Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Padgett, just so I understand, it is unnecessary to take the coil packs off the mount. Just bolt the entire Delco unit to the existing mounting bracket in the Reatta? Distributor lug connections are numbered as on the coil pack, except that wire routing might have to be modified.
padgett Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 That is correct, can just remove the Magnavox and coil pack by removing the three nuts on the bottom. Can then keep in a baggie as a spare.
Guest crtnrds Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Is there any noticeable difference in performance ?
padgett Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 If the Magnavox is in tip top shape, not really but I would rather have a used Delco than a new Magnavox.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Voltage is slightly higher from the Delco, but for most all applications, it won't make a difference, except that Delcos are more reliable. Then again, it wasn't my first choice, but we bought a new Magnavox for my little brother's coupe.Padgett: do new Magnavox coils still suffer from failure like the originals?
Richard S Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Back from the wrecking yard. It has been about 90 here in San Diego so I was working a little more slowly than usual, visited only one yard, and did not stay as long. There are two basic types of Delco units: The one that matches ours with a single long input plug, and the "other" type with 3 separate input plugs. The latter are much more common than the former. I removed both types thinking that the coil packs are identical anyway. I figured they would charge about $10 in a pull your own parts lot, but they wanted $33 apiece. I was not willing to pay that kind of money unless my Magnavox was failing. I too have the Accel version but frankly, I think all are made by Magnavox and there is no difference. When the pull your parts lots have their semi-annual 50% day, I will go back and find some unts. BTW, they are quite easy to find on Oldsmobiles. The location is so awful [below the front exhaust manifold, only accessible from under the car] most people don't bother pulling them. They are usually the 3 plug variety.
Guest crtnrds Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 What do they get for a NEW Delco? You're saying the Accel is the same as the Magnavox?
Richard S Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Try under $40 new for the Magnavox @ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BUICK-OLD...spagenameZWDVW.Here is a new 3 plug style Delco: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BUICK-OLD...spagenameZWDVW. At $180 new, I guess I now know why the wrecker charges $33 apice for them.Whle I am not certain that the Accel unit is made by Magnavox, I strongly doubt that anyone else out there is making that coil assembly.
padgett Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Sometime the prices at yards de junque get silly but for a 91-95 Ignition assembly complete (coils to bottom plate) I would expect to pay $25-$40. A Pick-A-Part usually has the best prices.
