mizzvonn Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Could someone advise on availability of a pair of ignition coils. Any help would be appreciated.
Guest imported_Speedster Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Almost any 6.volt coil will work. Are you looking for the Ignition-switch type coil assembly? Does your's have the duel coil system? Most '28s originally had a single coil, mounted behind dash, in an ignition-switch/coil assembly, but some had the 2 coil type distributors? Most people modify that by using later type coils, connected in parallel, and mount them inside of firewall, and use a separate Ignition-switch, since they are hidden between dash and firewall, and they are much easier to troubleshoot and repair that way. The 2 coil assemblies are next to impossible to find in good condition.
Guest imported_Speedster Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 It may be easier to find a single points distributor, that fits it, than it will to find an original type two-coil assembly? It all depends on if you are trying to 'Get it Running' or if you want to hold out for 'Exactly as Original'.
mizzvonn Posted July 11, 2006 Author Posted July 11, 2006 My husband is rebuilding a pair of original coils at the moment. He was hoping somebody had already done it. Thanks for your advice.
Guest imported_Speedster Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 If the coils (actually transformers) windings are Not shorted or open somewhere, then they may be repairable, but most coils have an outside container that is impossible to open without Damage. And you will need a transformer winding machine (to replace wire windings) if the wire is damaged (shorted or open). Will need an Ohm-meter to do continuity testing. If you need to replace something like a broken terminal, then opening the can is usually required. It just depends on their condition as to whether repair should be attempted.
