Guest oakland Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 I would like to repaint the air cleaner on my 63 Riveria. It appears the paint is sort of a crackle finish now. I think that is origional. How would I go about painting it this way and how would I find that shade of red? Also, what color is the flat surfaces of the grill. The outer edges are chrome, but the flat surfaces appear to be a light grey. I would like to sand mine down and repaint, if I can get the origional color.
Guest BJM Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 You are correct, krinkle finish red. Try CARS,Inc. for the correct paint and decals. Also if you are a BCA member, the Bugle has 2-3 other businesses that may have the red krinkle paint. In an emergency, consider locating some of this paint locally, such as in Home Depot and consider alternative ways to skin the cat - such as - if only a high temperature black krinkle is available, paint the air cleaner assemble this color and top coat paint it the correct shade of red (non krinkle) achieving the same result. Not sure on the correct shade of non chrome section on the grille of the 63. Consider - yoursmay be faded and not showing a very reliable color, or it may be totally correct. I need a 63 owner to chime in on this issue.
Pete Phillips Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 I've seen that crackle type paint in gray and in black, but never in red-orange, which is what the air cleaner should be. When I restored a '63 Riviera two-three years ago, I just used a red-orange Chrysler engine paint, which was the correct shade (without the wrinkle/crackle). A good auto paint supply store ought to be able to mix up what you need, with that wrinkle additive. It won't be available in the typical auto parts stores.Pete PhillipsBCA #7338
Guest JDHolmes Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 try www.hirschauto.comthey've got lots of paint for older cars, most made special. I don't know if they have the red-orange krinkle or not, but they have other high temp, non black colors.
Guest COMPACTBC Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 For the grill, I think Argent Silver or Silver Cadmium is the correct color. The Eastwood Company www.eastwood.com or 800-345-1178 is a good source for what you need. They also have wrinkle paint in spray cans. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
