Guest tv56 Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 Hello all! Anyone know why the horn on my 56 specialdoesn't beep? Horn ring is in place and seems to beok. Any suggestions? Thanks Tom V
Smartin Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 CHeck first the connections at the horn itself. They can be corroded and not allow it to operate. If it's clean, then you may have another wiring problem somewhere, or a problem at the steering wheel. Possibly the horn relay is bad?If everything else checks out, then the horn itself may be bad. They can be rebuilt, though:http://www.classiccarhorns.com/
NTX5467 Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 There typically is an adjustment screw on the horn itself, to fine tune the frequency emitted. Perhaps a few turns back and forth might loosen something up internally?Just a thought,NTX5467
Guest SLO Ken Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 I had the same problem with my '61 LeSabre. All the wiring under the dash looked good. So did the wiring from the horn to the firewall. It turned out to be corrosion on the connector that passes through the firewall that was preventing the horn from working. A little sandpaper and electric grease was all it took.
imported_buick5563 Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 I don't know if it is the same as 55, but there is a wire soldered to a copper ring (looks like a 1" piece of plumbing pipe with a rubber insulator in the middle) that surrounds the inner steering shaft about eighteen inches down from the steering wheel. The copper ring will eventually wear out after years of driving since it is constant contact with the electrical connection. Or, the wire could have become unsoldered, either way you will need to pull the wheel and upper column to fix it. When I first bought my 55, there was a horn button mounted under the dash with a wire going to the horn electrical connection just below the neutral safety switch on the column. You should be able to short the horn circuit at this connection and find out if the under hood parts are working. Good luck.Mike
