JacknFran Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 There are so few TCs in Canada that our dealer had never seen one and we are 120miles from Detroit. Problem/background. I bought my '91 white/ginger/ginger 3.0 six in CA in 2005 and drove it to London ON CA without a hitch. After a winter in storage it is acting up. It goes into first gear, then into second gear, into third gear then back to first and will not stay in drive. The dealer thought the problem would go away. The transmission shop has tried everything short of pulling the trans, believing it to be electronic. We replaced the trans relay and it did not help. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jack
blmay Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 The transmission shifting is controled by a transmission computer. If the tranny computer goes bad it will cause shifting problems. But before you send off the tranny computer for repairs, check the battery cables. If the battery cables are not making good connections, really good connections, this will also cause shifting problems.Bill
JacknFran Posted July 8, 2006 Author Posted July 8, 2006 Thanks, Bill for a quick reply. I'm gathering advice for my transmission guy who I like and trust. He'll be going at it again on Monday.
MPG Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 That transmission and engine combo is not specific to the TC, the 3.0 engine w/604 trans was available in just about every vehicle Chrysler built during that period. Especially the Mini-vans and Dynasty/New Yorkers of that era. Lots of updates since that was built and they can be made to pretty reliable these days. If he has to overhaul the trans make sure and advise him to use the newer ATF4 fluid in it and put an inline (cooler line) filter on it.
JacknFran Posted July 10, 2006 Author Posted July 10, 2006 Thanks MPG. He'll be working on it today and I'll make sure he hears your thoughts. When this is solved I will post the solution. Jack
16VEXOTICRED Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 I can't believe there is another TC in Canada,let alonein my neigborhood.I have a 1990 16V and would like to get in touch with you.I'm in Dorchester On.Email fmdelaney1@aol.com Tel.5192686493.Fred.
Guest Anthenium Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Hey ExoticRed1,I'm just North of Windsor! But I'm not in Canada...
JacknFran Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 Hey Fat Tony. Good to hear from a US neighborhood. I grew up in Windsor and knew that north of Windsor had to be the Great US of A.It's funny how things come in threes. There is a bar in Ypsilanti that is included in GQ's list of the 20 Hamburgers that you must eat before you die. The bar is the Sidetrack. Maybe you know it.There is a recycle yard there that has a power antenna for my other car. And now SmashBandits. If I get a chance..... Thanks, Tony. Jack
JacknFran Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 Hello Fred Would you believe Thorndale, maybe 8 miles away, in your township? !I've kept your telephone number and I will surely call tomorrow, Friday. For those wondering what ever happened about my transmission shifting problem, all will be revealed this weekend. I pick it up Friday and I want to get everything straight. It has something to do with..... wait for it..... Back up lights! Maybe you knew. Later, Jack
JacknFran Posted July 22, 2006 Author Posted July 22, 2006 The Last Chapter(maybe)I picked up my TC and it runs like a TC, quick, responsive smooth quiet, you know. When they scanned for problems, the advice was to check every wire to the ECM the dreaded electronic computor monitor. This took days with no results. They borrowed a used ECM and it indicated that the problem was with the connection to the back up lights. Apparently the problem was with the ECM and I now have a newly rebuilt ECM. The cost for that was $320.00 + the labor etc. but I am on the road. And... I now have back up lights. All this FYI (for your info)Thanks for listening. Later, Jack
Willhelm Reichert Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 now it's time to go junkyarding to look for a car with the same parts. Preferably because it got hit hard. spare parts are great when they cost $50 instead of 320+labor.
