alhussaini Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 I have problem with my DynaFlow Transmission! Anybody can help me how I can Upgrade my 1959 Buick Electra 401 DynaFlow Transmission? Or, can I changing with any other Transmission? Please help
The Old Guy Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 The 59 still has a torque tube ,so if you change to a different tranny, you will need to also convert the car to an open drive shaft. This means changing the rear end. If you decide to do this, there are adaptors available to install a later transmission.
JohnD1956 Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 In the Niagra Frontier chapter there is a fellow with a 55 Roadmaster who said the Ford guys told him to pull the carrier and replace it with a carrier and differential from an S 10 Pickup. I did grab a quick picture and sure enough it looks like that is all he did, but I don't know what he did with the two rods that came up to the front area of the drive shaft.
NTX5467 Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 With all due respect, that does NOT look like any 7.5" or 8.5" Chevy rear axle (from a GM S-truck) under that car. NOT with what I call a "bolt-in pinion" housing on the front (usually for 9.5" 3/4 ton Chevy pickup truck rear axles and possibly some of the 10.5" ring gear axles). Nor would those stiffening ribs on the main housing be applicable to the 7.5" or 8.5" Chevy rear axle. Not to mention the narrower track than what the Buick probably has. Not to also forget about having to weld on the coil spring pads where the leaf spring pads used to be. The S-10 would also have 9.5" rear drum brakes with no larger sizes available, if that matters.Basically, from what I see here, I suspect the "Ford guys" might need some bailing wire to try to hold that story together (wire cutters nearby). Now, what would be closer than the S-10, provided the tread width can be close enough to deal with, is the similar 7.5/7.625" ring gear rear axle from 3rd Generation Camaros. THAT housing has a boss to mount the torque arm that goes up to the rear of the transmission, plus coil spring mounting pads already in place. Still only small rear drums, but many had rear disc brakes (which would need some hydraulic system modifications to use). Using this rear axle would take out much of the adaptation issues with the S-10 item, plus adding the possibility of using some sort of front-rear location device in lieu of the torque tube.Just some thoughts,NTX5467
Buzzy1938 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Why go to all of that trouble? Just install a '59 Triple Turbine dynaflow w/ grade retarder feature locked out. A screamer!

And he would have to change out linkage, quadrant indicator, etc. Now I know that most of us Buick people would like to keep the torque tube intact (LOL) but I may have the solution to the problems soon.
bhclark Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 There are probably good spare dynaflows out there.Check out www.buick-59.com/mxbba/Lots of good 59 buick info there!
