soccermac Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 If I intentinally set off the alarm my horn goes off but if I just try to honk by the buttons it doesn't- any one know what needs to be checked?Added: The local repair shops says that the relay is clicking so I need to take it to a wiring shop but it could be that one of the horns isn't working because it's a 4 (something) horn. Does this make sense?
harry yarnell Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 if the alarm sets off the horns, then the problem has to be in the steering wheel. The horn relay is triggered by either the alarm ckt, or the horn button(s).The Reatta doesn't have 4 note horns.
Barney Eaton Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 I agree with Harry. You have either a broken wire or bad ground at the steering wheel.
soccermac Posted June 9, 2006 Author Posted June 9, 2006 Is this a DYI job or do I need a pro? Thanks, I posted asking if anyone knows a repair shop in my aera.
Barney Eaton Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 You did not list the year of your car, but from your message that said "buttons" I think you have a 1990 or 1991. that means you have a air bag car and you will want to take extra steps.Disconnect the battery. Remove the screws from the back side of the wheel, behind the horn buttons, I think they are Torx head. This will release the center part of the wheel assembly. There are two different connectors. The yellow connector is for the air bag and I would disconnect that first, Then the others. There should be two wires for the horn. One is 12V going to the buttons and the other is to ground. You need to test the two wires to find the problem. You must reconnect the battery to get the horns to work. Short the two wires together....if the horns honk, then you have bad buttons.
soccermac Posted June 9, 2006 Author Posted June 9, 2006 Yes, it's a '90. Ugh! I just had the horn buttons installed!
Barney Eaton Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Were the horns working before the buttons were installed?
soccermac Posted June 12, 2006 Author Posted June 12, 2006 No, the horns were not working before the buttons were instslled.
