Guest thongg Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 my gas cap door will not lock or stay closed looks like hinge is bad any ideas on how to fix or where to get parts dealer is no help here in lansing mi thanks
Guest Durahansolo Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 Mine gets like that in the winter time alot of times. When mine was screwing up, my dad put some WD-40 on it which loosened it up some. So now usually if it gets stuck I'll push and hold the lock button for a few seconds inside the car and then get out and go push the lock mechanism in the gas tank in. This will usually make it come all the way out so that the tank can close.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 Hell, I could probably come out and take a looky at itBut yeah, I'd try WD40 on the solenoid controlled thing, and maybe try pushing the release button in the glovebox a few times to maybe free something up.
Rawja Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 Assuming the the remote latch is operational, your problem could very well be that the latch is not properly aligned. The latch is held in place with two torx screws and can be adjusted "out" so flap can engage it properly.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 This Reatta is set to visit here tomorrow. Took a look at my gas door to see what's there to mess with...can't be too hard.
Guest joereatta Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 When my gas door wouldn't lock, I had to adjust the latch catch slightly by loosening the screws that hold it in place. Easy fix.
manikmekanik Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 I have a couple of parts cars, and may have the color fuel door you need.... if it can't be repaired.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Haha! Seems that this situation got past F14 Mariah brought her car over today. Seems that the latch itself (part activated by the solenoid in the trunk, via button in gove compartment) is faulty. I pried it apart with a screwdriver and found that the spring inside was rusty and broken, so it wasn't able to grab onto the gas door. Kind of hard to explain, but I'll get pix. The bottom part of the hinge itself is rusty and broken, but it should be able to close fine otherwise, and, the hinge itself is rivited and would be a pain to get out and replace. We went to Shroyer's to see if they had one. I knew they didn't have a Reatta, but the parts guy was pretty helpful and took a look at various GM cars of the era including a '90 Riviera, but seems the Reatta has its own. I fired off an email to Jim Finn, the Reatta savior Something you don't see everyday

Guest F14CRAZY Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Ehh, as I said before, a new set of hubcaps would cost me like $400, and I'd still have corroded wheels that are too small. And I can get nice used 16'' Buick chrome wheels with tires for like about the same price
Guest inthespot Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Nice gas flap enclosure I think red tape would have been more inline with current standards but anyway. Where did the trailer hitch on the other Reatta come from and does it bolt to the frame only? I would like to add one to my Maui Blue '90. I do not want to bolt through the trunk. The one that estaver had was nice on and well worth the money (I should have gotten that one ), for some reason I just did not want to put holes in the trunk. It was below the spare tire and I guess did not matter but wanted to try to go with something different.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 The hitch is on my car, and yes, it's of Estaver's design. There are the two points that bolt to the trunk well. I used some strips of steel to spread the weight out. Most of the push/pull force is taken by the point that bolts to the rear suspension "frame". I towed quite a load with it once. Haven't had any issues with it pulling through the trunk or anything. I can take photos of how it mounts if you'd like.BTW, it's not Estaver's hitch that he was selling, but I had plans for it and had my buddies at Career Center make it. It's overbuilt to say the least.Jim Finn has the parts we need, and I got the go to go ahead and order them.
Guest spyhunter2k Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 I'm assuming the "BU CK" isn't intentional, like those guys who repainted "TOYOTA" on their trucks to just read " YO "? Just kidding, my "C" actually fell off the other day. Wonder if Jim sells each letter individually...
Guest inthespot Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 I would like to see the photos. You can send them to me at "inthespot@comcast.net" if you don't mind and thanks
Guest thongg Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 thanks to f14 he has the gas cap cover repaired and also rewired the cigar lighter thank you phillip
Guest F14CRAZY Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 haha! inthespot wants some pixAnyway, her Reatta had 2 issues with the gas door...the spring for the latch was rusty and broke so the latch wasn't keeping the door closed, and there's an alignment problem because the bottom half of the door hinge is rusted and broke. I did what I reasonably could, and replaced the latch (Jim Finn, thanks). The "cigar lighter" fuse was okay but still wasn't getting power. I opened the console and checked the wiring...no power. As a quick fix, I spliced into an always-on wire in the console and used a 1 amp fuse (plenty for a cell phone charger).
