50dodge Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Hi I just purchased a 1955 chevy and it has the 6cyl engine. I'm trying to find out if the engine is orignal. There's an alternater on it instead of a generator. Can anyone tell me where to find the engine # and how to determine, from the number what engine this may be? Also I,m thinking, I may pull the 6 out and replace it with a V8. Can anyone tell me which engine will go in without major problems? The car will only be used on the street, no racing. Someone told me the best installation would be a 350 with a turbo trans. Any suggestions. Thanks Pat
novaman Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 the engine number should be located on the right side of the block to the rear of the distributor. the code prefixes:Z = 235"ZC = 235" w/HD clutchZH = 235" w/Aluminum cam gearZJ = 235" w/ HD clutch/cam gearY = 235" w/ PowerglideYG = 235" CorvetteLooks like Z engines were 123HP and the Y engines were 136 HP
