tbirdman Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 ...wrestling new tires with sidemounts onto a Packard. I guess my new tires are slightly larger than the old ones. Even with all the air out of the tire, it was tough getting one side on. I had to use a 2X4 for leverage. The other side I believe we just got lucky and it slipped on. Maybe I should have stayed with the Lester tires but the Bedfor classics looks so good.Even if I get a flat, they are not coming off
Guest imported_Speedster Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Yes, but Instead of calling them Bears, I always referred to them as '800 pound Gorillas'. I made 2 guide Rods, from 1/2" rods, that go thru wheel lug holes and then into the drum lug holes. You use them to lift the wheel into place and they help hold it there, while putting in the lug bolts. If you are talking about hanging the sidemount spares, I don't understand, there should be plenty of room to put something under the tire, (an old blanket or something) to hold them up, while attaching them?
tbirdman Posted May 5, 2006 Author Posted May 5, 2006 Onthe 32, they actually sit in the fender well at the appropiate height. However the fit is real tight probably due to the new tires being slightly larger.
Guest imported_Speedster Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Oh, Okay, my '29 has about 1.5" clearance below tire, with 20" wheels, so I had no idea it would be that close on the '32. That sure makes it difficult to keep the fender wells clean and dry doesn't it.
tbirdman Posted May 5, 2006 Author Posted May 5, 2006 Well there are drains at the bottom of the fender wells and because the tires fit in so snug, there's nothing that you can see to clean
Guest imported_Speedster Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Yes, that's what I mean, dirt and moisture could get traped under tire and cause rust, and you wouldn't know it. But since it's parked in a nice clean garage, there shouldn't be much. I forget, since nearly all of mine have to set out in the weather, and I have to worry about things like that. It must Be Nice.
