27 EW Valve clearance

Recommended Posts

Hi, Looking for the valve clearances for my 27 EW big six Regal Commander. I could also use the torque specs for the bottom end and head.

Parts needed: Inside door handles and window winder handles. A previous owner replaced the interior door fabric and left the handles off. Want to get it running and over to Lisle IL for the SDC zone meet. Thanks for any info

To Adjust Valve Tappets

1. Start the engine and allow it to run until warm.

2. Remove the valve cover plate.

3. Open the priming cup or remove the spark plug on No. 1 cylinder and turn the engine with the crank until No. 1 piston is coming up on the compression stroke. This will be evidenced by the escape of compression at the opening. With the engine in this position the intake and exhaust valves on No. 1 cylinder will both be closed.

4. Loosen the tappet adjusting screw lock nut "B" as shown in Illus. No. 47, hold the tappet "C" and turn the adjusting screw "A" up or down until a clearance of .006 of an inch is obtained between the valve stem and the adjusting screw on passenger cars and .006 of an inch on intake and .010 of an inch on exhaust valves of busses. Use a feeler gauge to determine the clearance.

5. Tighten the adjusting screw lock nut "B", at the same time holding the adjusting screw "A" to prevent it from slipping.

6. After No. 1 intake and exhaust valves have been properly adjusted, close No. 1 priming cup, open No. 5 and turn the engine as before. The valves on No. 5 cylinder will then he in position to adjust, and so on in the proper firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4. By taking them in this order, the whole set of tappets can be adjusted in two revolutions of the engine.

The tappet adjustment should not be made with a view of gaining extreme quietness at this point, but to obtain the quietest possible adjustment with the minimum given.

7. Replace the valve cover plate.

Tools Required? No. 25 open end wrench, pliers, feeler gauge, tappet adjusting wrenches C. 0. 250, 251 and 252.

commander,

Thanks for the blow by blow discription. I should have it up and running in no time. The initial setting will have to be done cold. Probably will set them 1 or 2 thou looser to allow for expansion. Any thoughts on torque specs? Thanks again.
