It is a bad habit to drain the water for the winter. The block will rust a lot when air (oxygen) and humidity left reacts with the iron. When filling the engine with cold water you should always run the engine hot so that the oxygen dissolved in the water goes away.

Using distilled water in an old car's cooling system avoids the corrosive chemicals that are in tap water. And the use of propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol gives the environment a break, as it is non-toxic. You can get it at auto supply stores (like NAPA). A 50-50 mix is optimal.
