Whistling noise

My 90 reattta has started whistling. The noise sounds in front of the dashboard.

Sometimes, after I turn the engine off, the noise stays for about a minute or so. Can anyone tell what could be causing this? Thanks.

Maybe someone installed a turbo when you weren't looking.

Anyway, check under the hood for any disconnected vacuum lines. That, or there may be a leak. The lines usually are in bad shape with our car's ages and just being in such an extreme environment under the hood doesn't help.

Okay, but what kind of leak should I be looking for and on what lines>

A vacuum leak. There's various small, black rubber hoses in the engine compartment that are responsible for cruise control, HVAC, and transmission operation. Carefully, with the engine running, search around under the hood and try to find the source of the noise

Thank you for the information. I will look for that. Again, thanks.

The vacuum switch on the brake (cruise control disconnect) of our Bonneville had a very annoying whistle until I adjusted it. Might look there.

This device is located under the dash, attached to the brake pedal. It releases the vacuum that holds the cruise control speed when the brake pedal is depressed

Just to thank f14crazy and padgett for their quick response. I did find a collapsed hose, replaced. Then I found that I was driving with the cruise control on. Whatever it was, it stopped for now. Again, thanks .
