is there a small clip that aligns and holds the crank sensor in place. both i and my mechanic friend could swear that there was something there to keep the crank sensor from moving around.

Yes. It's a metal bracket that holds the CPS in place. New sensors should come with them

Image attached of my CPS bracket. I did cut a little bit out of it to replace it without having to remove the harmonic balancer (as shown).

What Crank Sensor are you using with the S/C Philip? There's a difference between the 3.8L and the Series I Engine. 3.8L up to and including '90 used a Crank Sensor that, according to the FSM (and my memory) called for a special tool for alignment. The tool had fins, like the inside of the Harmonic balancer to ensure there was no clash with the Sensor.

The Series I was designed to be self aligning on quite a different type fastener.

so it just slides onto the bracket? and f14 i was at the closest gm dealer yesterday and the part they wanted to sell me was just the cps.

You can buy them with and without the bracket. The bracket often will rust to the locator pin, and bust when you try to pry it off.

As for alignment, I use a matchbook. It's not rocket science.

I got mine from Advance. They carry GP Sorensen which is marked made in USA, if that helps. They only offered me one with the bracket.

You don't need anything to align it. Only have to look and get the spaces even.
