Guest wwollet Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 My 1988 Reatta has 122k. The oil has been changed on a regular bases. Is 3k the time to change or more? I know the theory is that oil and filter are cheap...so do it more often then not? Should I use syntic oil, 5W30 regular or the high milegae brand they talk about? Some people say you can't go from syntic back to regular grade.....is all this oil just "bull" and keep puting in the standard 5w30. I have no leaks but will syntic oil cause leaks? Thanks,Bill
farnelle Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Probably as many opinions on this as there are posters on this group. I have asked that question to my brother who is a GM master mechanic and GM instructor. He contends that your GM engine will remain healty through regular (3K - 5K mile) oil and filter changes using any 5W30 oil that meets the manufacturer's specs. I have followed that advice for years and have never had an engine failure. My Buick LaSabre had 245K on it when the transmission went out and I sold it. It used no oil at all. The only caveat that I would interject is that if you do not reach the mileage mark before six months, change the oil and filter anyway.

Guest imported_dantm4 Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Personally, I've only used 3 types of oil in the Reatta - well 4 if you count what came in, and I've never been happier than with Mobil 1 5W-30. I tried Castrol Syntec the first time and didn't like it too much. I used Mobil 1 most of the time, then thought I'd try Wal-marts brand (they only had 10W-30) to save some money and I haven't been impressed. Mobil 1 and Wal-mart are completely synthetic. I don't know if you like synthetic but it seems like the engine runs smoother, but a lot of people don't like it. I also use some Valvoline Maxlife with the synthetic to recondition seals (which a lot of people say doesn't condition properly sometimes) Just my .02. Hope it helps. -Dan90' Black/Tan Coupe
Guest F14CRAZY Posted April 5, 2006 Posted April 5, 2006 Synthetic doesn't exactly cause leaks. It doesn't like it eats up your seals or anything. But the molecules or synthetic are smaller and more uniform, and can find places to leak out better than conventional. When I used to use conventional 5-30, I changed about every 2700 miles. For a while though I've been using Mobil 7500 and changing every 4500 or so. Will be using Mobil 1 and changing every 3-4k with the S/C

I typically drive around 8,000 miles a year and change oil twice. Fresh oil for winter cold and fresh oil for summer heat. I used Valvoline Durablend for many years and have just recently went to highmilage Valvoline. I always use AC filters. My 3800 will likely outlive the body panels and subframe.Flash
