BiggD Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 My '88 has developed a little gas problem. I filled it up last Sunday and put it back in the garage. Monday when I got home from work, there was a strong gasoline odor in the house. According to a mechanic, it appears that the rubber hose on the fuel neck that connects to the tank has sprung a leak. General Motors could not find the part and the mechanic said it was a "special Reatta only part". We tried reattaparts in Arizona and had no luck. Has anyone else had this problem, and is it fixable? Thanks
Guest EDBS0 Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 From time to time I also get a strong gas smell. Can't find any thing I'll check my filler hose.
Shelby Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 It is a simply piece of tubing. You might be able to get it at NAPA or a Hose supply . Check the clamps. I had an Olds Toro that the screw on the clamp just rusted out and caused a vapor leak. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THOSE GASOLINE VAPORS.
Guest Greg Ross Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 THere a number of potentials, BigD you don't reveal your locale, are you in "Salt Country"The Fuel Tank pick-up assembly "Fuel out/ Fuel return" has short steel lines outside the tank. These have been known to rust through, both are pressurized so a leak will result in raw fuel or vapor being sprayed out on top of the tank. Once it gets bad enough you'll start seeing it dripping down the side of the tank. I had this issue and bought a repaired/ reman Tank Pick-up assembly that had those steel tubes replaced.I believe on the '88 the flexible lines are swedged on to those steel stubs and come forward to about where the Fuel Filter is. If those have dry rotted you'de be in to splices and hose clamps to perform a repair.EDBSO. Do you get your fuel smell at start-up by any chance, the solinoid at the carbon filter(left front corner) can expel those vapors. Means a line is pulled off the cannister most likely.
