440rules Posted April 1, 2006 Posted April 1, 2006 HELP! I am restoring a 1966 Chrysler 300 convertible. Have been advised to go to 15" wheels so I can get 28-29" diameter tires. Local salvage yard is computerized and doesn't go back to 60's. Need to know what later model years Mopar wheels with 4.5/5 bolt, 2-3/4 center hole, 4+ backset, will fit my 300.

I'm getting close to 20 mpg with a 383 2v and the 15 inch wheels that the previous owner put on it. He said the car got about twelve before.... I can't figure how the tire size can make that much differance... but I'm not complaining. I do have a bit of an issue with my spedometer not being accurate... but what can you do? Keep it between the ditches!
Guest Moepar Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 If you have bud brakes (power), you have to be very careful what you get as the clearences are different than on later type brakes.Our '70 300 with the 440/4v (AVS, not Holley) gets 21 MPG on the highway, my '71 300 with the same gets around 17/18 Hwy (it was detuned in '71, & previous owner put in newer 727 automatic, which I think contributes to not doing as well as the '70). Both have the stock 15" road wheels.
ted sweet Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 just remember your 14" wheel covers wont fit. Thats the main reason my 66 newport still has 14" wheels. I have early 70s 15" wheels on my 68 300. My guess is that any 15" mopar steel whhel up to the early 80s will fit your car. What did was trail fit them before mounting tires.
canadawindsor Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 I just did the math on 14" vs 15" tires. If you are open to newer tires, a 235/70-15 is only 1.3% larger than an original 800x14 tire, based on circumference. I would assume that our speedometers have much more variance than 1.3%.
