West Peterson Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 I need to replace the manifold heat control valve spring on my 1940 180 (not the return spring, but the clock spring). Is that something that I need to make from flat stock, or are the springs available somewhere? Any ideas? Thanks.
Guest imported_Speedster Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Yes, I think at would be fairly easy to make, but It really needs to be tempered into spring steel. Which can probably be done by heating it red-hot with a torch and then dumping it in a bucket of water.
Guest bkazmer Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Are you talking about the spring which closes the heat riser as the car warms up? That's a bimetallic spring - the two layers have different coefficients of thermal expansion so it uncoils as it warms.

Is that bimetallic material available as flat stock to purchase... or is a bimetallic spring available. Are there newer cars that use this type of spring with replacement parts readily available?I have found one from a parts manifold, but it's pretty rusty. Does the rust affect its bimetallic qualities?
West Peterson Posted March 29, 2006 Author Posted March 29, 2006 Max Merrit has the spring available for $30.
