Hallo,

I have a short question - was asbestos widely used in car insulation in the past, and would it have been used in an Australian 1961 Ford Falcon?

Brake Shoes, and Linings.

All since replaced in the 1980's. The Brake dust in the wheels is not a good thing to sniff around in.

Hello from the USA !!!

I would not worry about asbestos on your car!!! The brakes and clutch linings are the only items that might contain asbestos in any high amounts...and as the other poster has stated they would most likely be long gone by now!!!

Enjoy you fun new-old Ford !!!

I never found any asbestos in my US Falcons... other than what was used in the brake and clutch linings, as previously noted.

The insuation used under kickpanels and such was common fiberglass batts... under the rubber floor mats was jute padding...

I started my career working in a automotive machine shop, turning drums and arcing shoes to match. Standing there all day arcing asbestos shoes, standing in a cloud of dust, before it was decided that was an unsafe practice. We were no longer to arc brakes shoes.

Soon there after, asbestes shoes were taken off of the market. I try not to think of all of the dangerous dust I breathed in before it was discovered to be unsafe. I hope it never catches up with me.

So far, so good.......

Same here, I breathed my share of brake dust years ago.

It's kind of funny that recently I spend a small fortune to have some old asbestos tile removed from a room in my house. They sealed off the room, did air monitoring, proper disposal, etc. I don't even want to think about the old days frown.gif

I believe that you can take this Asbestos fear too far...

In the Philadelphia area the big Asbestos Abatement companys are run by the Phila. Mob !!!

There is big big money to be made here...

They make each and every job a big costly job!!!

It's a big big racket!!!

There is BIG Money to be made in Asbestos Removal!

In New York years ago Sammy "The Bull" Gravano , John Gotti's second in command ran an Asbestos Removal Company...among other lucrative ventures!!!

I don't see the real hazard in Asbestos floor tiles or house siding...This stuff is not going to fly around into the air!!!

If you inhale ANYTHING into your lungs long enough you will have health problems...if not cancer... (sawdust, rock dust, fiberglass, grain dust etc.)

You just have to use common sense!!!

I have also been exposed to lots of brake dust...

I refuse to worry about Asbestos!!!

I have other things to worry about!!!

I should have been suspicious when the air monitoring guy that came out (after they finished the removal) drove up in a Mercedes shocked.gif

Linolium old floors were made with the stuff, and by law if you "encapulate" it, or put a new floor over the top you are fine.

A lot of old hair dryers, and toasters had it also.

I was talking with a guy on Saturday who said he had it.He said his lungs would fill with fluid as his body tried to flush the "irritent" out, i.e. fibers. The fluid build up would lead to coughing, and infections.

This is the whole 9/11 issue, since the lower 42 floors had the steel covered with it for fire proofing, then after 1972 it was outlawed in building, and the rest of the floors were covered with something else.

All the 9/11 smoke went over Brooklyn and South to the Jersey shore. Who know what exposer people will get.

Can't be good.

asbestos is in more than you think.due to nafta products from Canada like taping compound contain asbestos.read labels.so dont think it is gone.we are told that any building product that is before 1982 is possible asbestos containing material.the only way you can find out is to have a few fibers of the insulation tested.i have an asbestos handelers license is so thatis how i know this stuff.
