Since it looks like I may Not be able to find any usable 20" wood-wheel rims for the '29, Can anyone tell me what other years, will fit the '29 drums ?

Since the brake drums are 16" diameter, I would think any early '30s wheels with the same 8-lug pattern should work, Correct? What year did they change the lug-bolt pattern? With it setting 1/2" lower, with 19" wheels, I doubt anyone would notice.

Tom, Thanks for the Pics,

but you Really Burst My Bubble, I was afraid of that. Only 7 lug bolt holes. So doesn't look like that Idea is going anywhere. I may have to have Chip Foose or Boyd Coddington Carve out some modern Aluminum Bling-Blings, to get this baby rolling.

Sorry didn't mean to burst it. I am normally don't do that.

I was on the phone with another Packard owner earlier this evening (he was very knowledgeable I must say) and ask him about your wheels. He said the bigger Packard?s have the 8-lug setup compared to the standard models. I hope I stated his words right.

Tom,

Sure, any help would be appreciated. So, in '31, some models used 7 lugs and some models used 8 lugs. Is that correct? That's what I was thinking since I have pictures of '30 and '31 Packards with what looks like 8 lugs, but wasn't sure? If so, then what I need to know is which models used 8 lugs? Was it the long-wheel-base Super-8s and 12s only? And I need to know what year they stopped using the 8 lug pattern completely?

Eric,

'29 Wheels are 8 on 8" spacing, with 3" between bolts and a 6 1/2" hub hole.

The Wheels on my 1 ton Chevy are 8 on 6 1/2", so there's no way they could be modified to fit. And I think about 18" is the minimum diameter at tire seat, to clear the brake-drums.

Speedster-you might blow in a call to Don Sommer=American Arrow. He makes NEW chrome wires, but they ain't cheap (quality never is). He might know of someone who just took the steel discs off of their cars (to put Don's happenin' wires on!). You could pick up on some discs.

Hi Rick,

This is the reply I got back from the other contact

"Last time I bothered to notice, there was still a wheelwright advertising in Antique Automobile; assuming your friend has the metal work, no doubt the wheel could be reconstructed. At least that's where I'd start. Sorry, no other thoughts on this one."

Hope this helps

Any one know if Lock-rings for Disk or Wire-wheels will Fit Wood-wheels, for similar or same year (1929 mainly)?

Yes. They're the same. In fact, I've been told Dan Sommer (American Arrow) that ANY lock ring for a 20-inch wheel should be the same for all brands. There are only two types of lock rings, and he thought that there was only one for the 20-inch. He thought that Coker tire may be offering them, because of the large number of cars that use them.

I called Coker and they can have the Lock-rings made to whatever size you need, at $179. each. But he couldn't tell me if that was with them tempered to spring-steel like the originals were or not. He's going to mail a small sample piece to make sure it's the same shape. But since I now know that many others will fit, I'm not going to be in a big hurry to buy new ones.

Thanks,

Someone told me that the wood spokes in wood-wheels also had a dowel pin between the spokes that locked them together. I had to see that for myself, so I took apart my worst, unusable wheel, to find out.

There are wood 3/8" dowel-pins between spokes. They don't go horizontally thru spokes, (there would be No way to do that) but they are drilled in from backside, about 2/3s of the way thru, at gap between spokes. And they do lock the spokes together, I could not get the spokes out of rim until I drilled out the dowel-pins. The dowels are hidden and held in by the back hub plate, which is held on by the lug-sleeves.

I now have some good extra spokes and hub plates, If I damage any of the others, or if I find a good rim somewhere. The rim is junk tho.

I did find 3 more good wood wheels and I'm now trying to save up my Pennies, to be able to afford them.

No, I didn't think to take pictures, but I can take some tomorrow of the naked spokes and you will be able to see where the dowels were.

Here's a pic of 2 spokes. 8 of the 12 spokes are like the one on left (with large lug-sleeve hole) and 4 of them are like one on right of picture. The 3/8" hole at gap between spokes is here the wood dowel pin goes. It doesn't go all the way thru to front side. You can see traces of original green paint on them.

I now have 4 of the original wheel rims and rings repaired, using welding rod. But 2 of them have 2 each wood spokes that need replacing (I have good spokes from other bad wheel). To do that I will need at least 16 lug-sleeves. New sleeves need to be Pressed in. I've determined that it is impossible to remove the old ones without destroying them. So if anyone knows of a good source for the sleeve tubes, Please let me know?

I got the Sample piece of Lock-ring from Coker. It is slightly different shape and thicker than originals but the main difference is that it appeared to be made of Brass instead of steel like the originals. Brass would not have enough spring to keep it's shape when expanding, to install them? So I called Coker and found out that they are an alloy Manganese-Bronze, which gives it the durability and spring that it needs. So I would think that they are much Better than originals. Has anyone used their rings?

Man, there sure are a lot of names used for those rings: Lock, Snap, Split, and Houk are some of them. Anyone know what Packard called them in the Parts-manual? Personally I prefer calling them Split-rings, seems more descriptive since there are other things called Lock and snap rings. Anyone know where the name Houk, came from? Was he the inventor or something?

On he previous thread subject of trying to find 8-lug wheels that would fit, I am curious what the lug size pattern was on the optional 8 lug setup that Pontiac offered in the 60's. Obviously the wheel diameter would probably not be large enought to clear the drums. But I was just curious. I saw an acticle in Hemmings about that Ponitac option.

I now have enough good wheels to get it rolling and sidemounts also but I would still like to find some lug-sleeves to be able to assemble another wheel or two from the extra parts I have left over, if anyone has any for sale. Thanks,
