CRCAIN Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 Help please all of you "electrical engineers"! I recently replaced the generator on my 1949 Packard with an alternator. In order to do so, it was necessary to convert from the original 6 volt positive ground to 6 volt negative ground. Since the conversion, I have not reconnected the clock or radio. Is it safe to do so or will harm result? What if any changes need to be made? Thanks guys,Charlie CainTexas1949 Packard 23821948 Buck 56S1956 MGA
52deluxe Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 to my understanding if the radio has a original vibrator in it it should be fine, if its solid state you need to replace it. as for the clock, if it were me id reverse the wires on the motor, but i dont have a wiring diagram of the packard clock handy and i know there were several uniquely designed clocks in some cars that were not just a simple motor/gears setup.
Mrbuick714 Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 I have a friend who makes 6 volt positive ground alternators. Let me know if you need one.mrbuick714@webtv.net
Guest Albert Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 The Packard clocks do not have a motor in them, all the are is a single coil that gets enedgized to wind the spring... so the will work eather way, you will have to switch the wires on the ignition coil, and on the amp guage if yours has one or it will read back wards.. and check what viburator type you have in the radio as in the previous post..
Guest Randy Berger Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Bill, if your lights don't cast shadows, pull or push the knob on your dash that says "LIGHTS".
