sweetford55 Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Looking at a 55' Ford the owner says the front crossmember needs replaced. Is the part available and is it expensive to replace? Is it bolted, welded or riveted. Does the engine and radiator need to be pulled to replace? All input would be appreciated. Thank you.......Floridacruiser
junkyardjeff Posted March 19, 2006 Posted March 19, 2006 Its welded in and only the front bumper and splash pan need to be removed, the core support will have to be unbolted but it can be held up with out removing anything from it and the lower controll arms will have to be unbolted too. I had a frame/suspension shop install one in my 55 and repros are being made,I found a good used one for mine. Jeff
wills51 Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 man i got a 54 that needs one to be replaced too!!!!!!! you can get a new crossmember for the 55-56 years(which sucks for me cuz it wont work on a 54)from www.Dennis-Carpenter.com the price is 375.00 and does not have the motor mount bracket! hope this helps tim
Sam427 Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 That's a pretty common problem with those cars. I rebuilt a 56 Customline when I was 18, did it from the ground up, took me 2 1/2 years, one of the things I had to do is build a new front cross member, made a pattern, burned it out and welded it in, car drove like a million dollars!
sweetford55 Posted December 6, 2006 Author Posted December 6, 2006 Thanks to everyone!!!! Didn't have to do the job. Ended up buying a '55 with a perfect front crossmember.
