Need Help- Alarm goes off when key turned in door lock

On my brother's 89 coupe the security alarm goes off when the key is turned in the driver's door lock to unlock it. No problem with opening it on the passenger door side. Has anyone else had this problem or any suggestions? His remote does not work so unlocking it by key is the only way in. Also it only locks from the inside, on the driver's side, if you lock it manually by hand.

Any help or comments are appreciated.

For now, try locking and un-locking with the key or manual lock only, do not use electric lock switch inside door, this may be activating the alarm.

My '84 Corvette does the same thing, and I have no remote. If I use the electric lock switch, the alarm goes off.

The passenger side key lock de-activates the alarm on Reattae.

I have never had one apart...but the lock has no mechanical attachment, it is a switch. The switch does two things,

(1) energizes the door lock/unlock relay...if it was a bad relay, the other door would not unlock with the key.

(2) It also activates or deactivates the theft deterrent.

I'm guessing a bad switch at the door or a bad connection.

You're always right, Barney!

I must've been visualizing the Corvette locks, since that's the only one giving me trouble.

Barney and Randy, thanks for your replies. Barney, the passenger side lock can be used to unlock or lock the car so the relay seems to be working. When the key is turned to open the drivers door the door unlocks just fine but the security system does not get the word that the entry was normal and legal so it sets off the alarm as the door opens confused.giftongue.gif

You must love that Corvette. I wish their late model chrome 5 spoke wheels would fit on a Reatta
