Tires for my MGBGT

Recommended Posts

Ive been looking for tires for the MGBGT restoration project and am not sure what to buy - Im leaning towards the Dunlop SP60's 175 70 14s. They look pretty good and I think the car originally came with Dunlops. Michelin doesnt seem to make a size that is a direct replacement. Does anyone have experience with the Dunlops? What brands are you using on your Brit sports cars? This MG will be driven the way it was intended so handling is important. Price-wise there seems to be a less expensive Cooper that would fit but I don't know anything about them.

Thanks,

Terry

My TR6 originally came with 185R15 Michelin redlines which are hard as rock, notorious in the rain, and about $1200 a set before mounting in reproduction. I'm putting Coker Classics (original size Michelin look-alikes) on it which I understand are a little better in the rain if softer compound.

I believe MGBGT's came with 165R14's originally. Coker still carries 2 blackwalls that size, a $156 Michelin (H-rated), and a $81.00 Vredestein (S-rated). Universal Tire sells just the Vredesteins. If this is a street car and will only be occasionally autocrossed for fun these might be a better bet. According to Improve & Modify MGB the 175/70R14 is around 3% smaller than stock in circumference.

If the suspension has been beefed for more aggressive driving (which I don't do) the TR guys are all over the map in preferences, but probably the single most popular tire brand among the guys I've talked to is Toyo. A lot of the autocrossers swear by them.

Hi, Terry...

Cannot help you, bud. Like Dave mentioned I, too, have 185R15 Redlines from Coker on my TR6. They are of fairly recent vintage (2003) and are very slightly softer, but, hard as my head compared to Toyo's.

We tossed the topic around at an MG club meeting the other nite and consensus was that the Dunlops represented the most authentic tire(oops thats TYRE), and would be a good choice for the car. We won't really be racing it, just enjoying it (Mg's motto is "Safety Fast" ya know). The new Dunlop SP60s are supposed to be an improvement over the SP40s and price-wise we can get them reasonably, so the order has been placed. Once I figure how to mount them on the nicely painted wheels and do some road testing later in the season we'll give you some feedback here.

Thanks,

Terry

I have Michelins on my 69 MG roadster. I think 185 65. That's a little oversize which is OK by me. Either mount them yourself by hand or go to a shop that does mag wheels and has a spreader. I got mine from Tire Rack, and have gotten maybe a half dozen sets of tires from them. I have Toyos on my Porsche 356 and the 911.

Tire Rack had the best pricing. We would have gone for Michelins but the correct size isn't made any longer. We're using the Michelins on Sue's MGBGT and really like them. Mounting shouldnt really be a problem, we've got some friends in the garage business who are pretty careful. There is always touch-up paint!
