Packards in Movies

Recommended Posts

I just saw another 2 movies with Packards in them. The first - "It came from Outer Space" 1953 [ a good movie! ] had a '49 Packard sedan in a scene outside the Sheriff's office. #2 - "The Haunting" 1963 [ also good ] had a "51 or '52 Packard Taxi that dropped the Professor's wife off at the old house. That's all for now!

Thanks.

I will post these if I don't already have them in the roster.. The roster you saw printed had been added to after I sent it in to the bulletin editor.

Someone who likes horror movies might be on the lookout for a '55 Packard in the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" coming out. I've seen T.V. ads that give a glimpse of what appears to be a '55 sitting next to a shed in the very beginning of the ad. It's too fast to verify for sure, but maybe someone will be able to confirm this. I don't plan to see the movie just to catch a Packard in Movies moment.

Not sure if this is on your list. 1980's movie "The Hearse" starring the car itself along with Trish Van Devere and Joseph Cotter. This 1953 Henney hearse is the main character in a "B" movie still available on ebay and amazon.com

I will try to get a scan of the front cover of dvd case.

Two old movies that had Packards in them.

1. A movie made back in the 70's titled The Betsy. One of the stars in the movie was young Tommy Lee Jones portraying a race driver. This movie I beleieve had some nice old classic Packards in it at the beginging.

2. One of the Back to the Furture Movies starring M.J. Fox, had scene were he was driving a bathtub Packard convertible, a cream colored one if my memory serves me correctly.

The "Back to the Future" Packard is a 1948 Custom Eight, owned by a long-time CCCA and PAC / PI member in California.

A 1953 Clipper is featured on the poster for "Don't Come Knocking," a 2005 film by Wim Wenders, starring Sam Shepard, Jessica Lange and Tim Roth. It was released last Friday. See www.imdb.com for more info and a pix of the poster.

John:

Any idea what years they were, I've seen the movie a few times but never remember Packards in them. In all likelyhood given the time frame of the flashbacks they would be 30's models.

AlK: I would be more than happy to view the film again and make a list of the Packards in the film. However before I would give the information, there is a catch. I know that you have submitted this list to PAC, when my on going disagreement with the editor of the TPC and PAC is settled, then I would be more than happy to submit the information to you. Until that happens I will contribute no information to you, knowning that it will benifit PAC. If the list was for the members of the forum only, then it would be done in short order.

I know that you will not like this answer, and call me every name in the book. You have ripped into me in the past, on some matters that have been very close to my heart. So there for I am extending to you the same cordiality, that was shown to me by PAC last year at Hershey.

Your absolutley right John. After reading your infantile, childish response, several names, titles, expletive deleteds, epithets came to mind, but to refer to you with any of them, unmans me, and insults those specific classes of people, so I decline!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AlK: I don't know what your upset about. I offered to give the information that I have, just because certain conditions have to come about first, I fail to see why you should be so angry at me. I suppose you will hold me in contempt for along time.

Now maybe you are getting a taste of how I feel now about PAC, after they tried dumping on me several times for stances I have taken against them, and your defending them, and ripping into me about the V12 and Berry matters.

You called my reply to your request childish and infantile, but yet when unreasonable demands and consetions are made of me by PAC, to get a letter printed in the TPC that aren't of my own words. I didn't see you ripping into PAC for that kind of behavior, and but yet you are mad at me for that kind

of behavior.

When a club such as PAC, has attempted to have me silenced several times, and the editor of the TPC used me and my wife and Brad for his own gain, I tend to get a little upset about that. However when a fine and repsected club like the Classic Car Club of America, which I am a member of, ask for information I give it freely and willing. In the February editon of the CCCA Bulletin, asking for information about Invicta, no not the Buick Invicta. I dug into my library and did some research about Invicta. I sent a two page letter to the editor of the Bulletin, concernig the history of Invicta, and answering questions they asked about Invicta. Two weeks later on the March 7th, 2006, I received a post card in the mail. The post card was from the editor of the CCCA Bulletin. The post card reads as follows.

Hi John,

Thank you so much for your " super letter to the editor." Look for it in the May Bulletin.

Best,

Bev

The editor of the Bulletin and the writter of the post card is none other than THE GREAT AUTOMOTIVE HISTORIAN BEVERLY RAY KIMES.

When I get my copy of the May edition of the CCCA Bullentin, I will post a copy of my letter in this forum for the benefit of you and SRB.

John F. Shireman

PS: AL K; Later on in the week, I will be posting some Packard triva things about some former employess of Packard. This information I will gladly share with the members of this forum first, and let PAC get it second hand, when SRB comes snooping in. Ya Stu this is information that I bet you don't have in your library on Packard that I have.

Hey John

I really have enjoyed some of your more informational posts, and I was on your side there with the article thing. But I really have to tell you, that your overall attitude has gone past healthy.

Al keeps this list because the rest of us get to use it and help him keep it up when we see something in a movie. Your terroristic tactic of keeping information to yourself is juvenile at best. I will watch the movies myself and post the information here, just because you wont. This is a group effort to keep this up, if you dont feel like contributing fine, but if you do, do so unconditionally.

I hope you get back to your informational posts without all the sour grapes. I used to enjoy reading your stuff, now I just go on to the next post, because I cannot stomach the swill.....

First, I am in no way angry with you per se... If I was they would not have allowed the post to stay and you and everyone else in this forum would not have to ask if I was angry, you would know it. Second, when I make an offer to help someone, I help, I don't make infantile requirements. You sound like the little kid in the playground who does not get his own way so he is going to take his marbles and go home

However you feel about PAC is your business, don't try to drag me down to your level. I have read HOW you go about trying to get a response and all in all re-read my statement about the kid in the playground.

That's because unknown to you, I sent a letter to Stuart thru PAC channels after I got some further info about the article that kind of puts a different spin on things. In it I expressed my viewpoints. I did not get a response either but then I did not feel I was owed one. I made my views known, that's the end of it. You, Sir go on and on and on ad-infiniteum, ad-nauseum. Two years later and your still ranting about the V-12, and the 1965 Packard ressurection. My God John, there is more to life than beating a dead horse.

This one I kind of doubt. My cousin Guido and his friend Tony Split-Nose in Atlantic City says there is nothing going on and they have not had a contract in months, so I doubt that much of an attempt to silence you has been done(T-I-C)

ALK: In your third paragraph, if you are refering to the fictionalized story about Brad Berry written by SRB, that quotes puts a different spin on things, doesn't mean swat. Any information that you might have gotten on the story, whether favoring my true version, or SRB's less than honest version, is second hand at the very best. Any letter written by you to SRB with your viewpoints on things are basically your opinion that is all. On the hand other hand what I have stated about Brad, comes from a first hand source me., so I know what is true and what is false you don't.

This matter could end in real short order if SRB wanted it to. All he would have to do is come into this forum and present some varified proof, exposing me as being a liar, as to what I have stated about Brad Berry, verses his statements. On the other side of the coin, I have people still living in my community that I can obtain statements from, verifying my story. So there is no reading between the lines that is an open challenge to SRB, which I am prety sure will go unanswerd by him.

You sent your letter through Packard channels to SBR, wouldn't it have much simpler to just send it to him directly, using the USPS or email. I used the direct method of sending my letter to him, using the USPS and registered mail return receipt, just to make sure that he got the letter.

Twinfour: Let me respond to you about how I feel about the movie list, and putting the Berry matter aside for a moment. I went back to the original post that got the movie thing going in the first place. This was an idea put fourth to PAC by ALK. If you sit back and look at the pciture as a whole, if it were up to PAC this forum wouldn't be here. Going back to the days of the Classicar forum, some PAC officals at times , have tried to control content and subject matter in the prior forum and this one as well. One west coast officer came in here an stated that only the good Packard mechincis belong to clubs like PIC and PAC. If these officals that run these clubs aren't willing to come in here and break bread with us, want nothing to do with this forum, why should we contribute information to them directly that they can benefit from.

When this idea was first put forward to PAC, and using this forum as a source of information for thier benefit, here is what should have been done. The president of PAC come in here, and saying that we have an idea for a new roster, and would like the help of the people that come in this forum, including none club members. Also stating that that from this point forward we would like a closer relationship between the PAC and the people of this forum. Instead what they are saying by thier silence, is that we will gladly take your information, but the heck with you. . So along with what I have stated above along with other actions taken by certain PAC club officers, is why I have such a dislike for PAC, and become such a vocal critic. So I figure why should I give them first hand any information that I have.

Maybe it might be time for for certain persons running PAC to first change their ways of doing things. So if your going to admonish me in public, do the same to PAC.

John F. Shireman

PS: There was a movie staring Red Foxx and Richard Pryor that had some nice old Packards in it.

Guest CaptainBristol

I respectfully request that people who wish to air a beef with a person or organization please start a new thread.

This thread is nominally about Packards in movies. I believe that is why most forum members (myself included) choose to read it. I am reasonably confident that most forum members are not interested in squabbles. If you are interested in representing this Packard forum as an attractive place to a wider audience, then I humbly suggest one way to do that is to separate the squabble threads from the information threads.

All the best and thanks,

Mark in Alaska

CaptainBristol , I now nominate you to MajorBristol.....Thanks!

Now here's another movie with a Packard - "Being There" with Peter Sellers { I'd safely say his best! } near the begining it shows him dusting off and polishing a '39 or 40 black 180 in a garage with no air in the tires and obviously has not run for many years. Later on he states he's never sat in an automobile ..... ever! By the way, it's getting pretty bad now - when I'm watching a movie and it's usually with my wife and I see a Packard I go ' Oh look , it's a Packard ! I get a "not again!" or "will you stop- I'm trying to enjoy the movie!" or some such ditty. Anyone else have a similar situation?

Mr. Kahl, I would hope that every person making a contribution to the PAC Movie Roster, receives the credit they are due, for contributing to the roster. One would assume, that this list is going to be published in a PAC publication.

It has already been published once in Pac. That particular list did not have any acknowledgement as to contributors. My mistake. I have since added that to the list. There are no duplicates per se. If someone sent a letter I included their name in the list of contributors. If I picked it up from this forum and I already had it, I did not list the person in the list of contributors. This may not set well with some folks but I am not doing this to get a pulizter prize, I am doing it for fun. If someone does not want to send me info because they won't get a byline, or any other spurrious reason then cei la vie, amour, le guerre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Kahl, You"ll have to excuse me as my French is not so good mon ami, but did you mean to say: "C'est la vie, amour, et guerre"? Loosely translated that means: " Such is life, love, and war".

Mr. Kahl, You"ll have to excuse me again as my English is not so good at times:

I believe that you misspelled spurious. One should master their native language first, before being inept in trying to speak another language.

Al, That's a good question. Is it possible to have an up to date list of the movies posted here?

I saw the "Bank Dick" that had a Packard but I think it has already been mentioned.

The Marx brothers "a day at the races" there is a Packard convt. sedan featured prominently in one shot the the race track. There is a blue/white '56 Clipper in a 1959 airline stewardess soap opera "come fly with me" (featuring a disasterious Eddie Fisher verson of the song of the same name--proving he was no Frank Sinatra) There is a beige/Brown 55 Patrician seen in many of the early shots of "North by Northwest", the scenes in NY, around the Plaza hotel.
