We are restoring an old Maxwell Fire Truck here in Sweden. The title show 20790 as a VIN# and on another paper show 20790 as a engine#. We have not find any numbers on the truck yet. The truck was first registered June 6 1924 here in Sweden. Did they have the same engine and chassi numbers? Can any one tell what model year it is from the numbers?

Maxwell trucks were built in 1923 and 1924, models 25 (half ton) and 50 (1.5 ton). Both were four cylinders with 3.625" bore and 4.5" stroke.

Serial numbers were :

1923 - 20282 to 20873

1924 - 20874 and up

So your truck is a 1923 model.

It was not unusual for the engine number and the serial number (VIN) to be the same in those days. The engine number was stamped on the left side of the block, just below the head between cylinder #2 and #3.

The serial number should be stamped on a plate attached to the dashboard inside the vehicle. The number may have also been stamped on the chassis frame, right side, ahead of the front axle.
