Does anyone know where I can purchase a Floor mount, push-type starter switch, like used in '29 Packards? It's similar to floor mount dimmer switches but is momentary instead of off/on type switch, and handles a Lot more current than dimmer switch.

I wonder if it would be possible to internally modify a dimmer switch, to become a starter switch? I could have it activate a solonoid-relay to handle the starter current.

You could take the switch apart and remove the latching mechanism. That way it turns into a momentary switch. The you only hook up the leg that is active when the switch is pushed fully in.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. I'll try to find one and see how hard it will be to modify. I'm starting to think it's going to be very hard to find an original type switch. I don't remember seeing any for sale on eBay, in the last couple years. Anyone that has any is probably keeping them for spare.

Thanks, Kev, The one on eBay looked good enough to me, so I bought it.

If it is useable, that will be better than trying to modify a dimmer Sw. and if it doesn't I can always put it back on eBay.

Hey no problem. If working as a software developer for years has taught me, if I know what I am looking for, I can find it or get a reference to it via the internet.

When you write software using Microsoft Technology. You learn quickly how to find answers the things that either are not documented, or just dont work as described.

It's the least I can. You guys have been a great source of help and information.

So Big Kev I guess I can and maybe have blamed you for a lot of my problems I had in the past (or at least the programmers) working with Microsoft Products. I use to work as a Computer tech doing hardware repairs for 12 years, Starting out with Dos 3.31, Windows, Windows 286, working on 640k (not megs) and 20meg hard disks (ST225), (we never thought we could ever fill a 20meg hard disk back then, NOT). I even have the licence plate for the car still, see pic. The car got written off last July, when someone figured i was going to go through a red light with my utility trailer in tow. They ended up on the trailer as it's only 18" off the ground. I bought the car back for $100 and spent another $100 for the paint and parts.

Well I dont create any of the Microsoft products, but I use the Microsoft Developer products to create new software. So if you think using Micorosft products as a consumer are a nightmare, try using there development software. Oi vey...

I wish one of auto parts places had a very comprehensive website. It's just like going into the the stores. If you don't have a part number or a modern make and model to x-ref it's hard to find anything. Napa seams to be pretty good when you go into their stores. But their online parts lookup is hit or miss. Napaonline.com doesnt even have any listings for Packard before 1955.

Sometimes their database returns odd results. I can put in a Lester part number and find it perfectly. But take their part number and half of the time it returns no results. Weird. I guess an illustrated parts catalog is still the best reference.
