Installing new rear spring U-bolts.

Recommended Posts

Rear spring u-bolts on my '31 Roadster need replaced due to worn threads that no longer hold nuts tight. Any way to get old u-bolts out and new ones in without raising the rear portion of the body? Or, would it be best to cut an access hole in floor panel under my rumble seat to access top of rear frame crossmember and u-bolts? Could make a sheet metal plate to close & seal hole. Just hate thought of cutting a hole in otherwise perfect body. Any advice appreciated. RW

I would post this question on the Ahooga website; there are a lot of people who are knowledgeable about the Model A who frequent the site. I replaced the U-bolts on my Fordor but had the body off at the time. I guess if it were my car, I would remove the body, especially if it has not been off before. It would give you a chance to do some painting and to replace the body insulator webbing. But, this is a big job and may not be one you want to tackle. So, check with the A specialists at Ahooga.com Good luck!

Everything is accessable from the bottom.

There are tricks for spreading the springs without a spreader. I would ask over on one of the model A boards (ahooga.com or fordbarn.com) for the safe way to do the tricks. I always use a spreader so I am kind of rusty using the trick way.
