Howdy. We've had our Claret convertible on autotrader.com for a while now, and it seems I have someone interested. Below is the email that he most recently sent me...

Hello,

I have discussed about your car with my client,Before he made a business trip out of the country.Am from canada and my Client is also from canada. He has finally accepted the price and hopes the engine is well Serviced because, He can't wait to see the car parked in his garage.

However, My client made out a certified cashiers check of ($12,000)Before he travelled to ITALY on a crucial business trip, the Amount on the check he deposited for the car is for the total Expenses which includes the purchase of your car, tax, the pick-up of the Car from its present location and the shipping charges /other Necessary Shipping arrangements. However he has instructed us to carry on with This transaction. So you're required to deduct the cost of your car ($6,500) and send the balance of ($6,500) to my Pick-up agent via money gramTransfer to enable him offset shipping charges /arrangements.Once the transaction is concluded and the check clears my fore man will be coming for the Pick-Up of the car from its present location, on an open vehicle and then Drive to a pre-paid shipper for shippment, and also conclude other Necessary shipping arrangements. So you don't have to nuisance or bother yourself About the pick up and shipping arrangements, while title papers and Other necessary documents will be sent by you via any courier service to my Customer.

Please confirm the above explicit information and provide me with Legal Name, Address and Phone number for check payment to be delivered to you via the fastest courier service. Thanks and have a great day!!!

Best Regards

Brian

NB: Consider your car sold to my client. I look forward doing business with you.

I believe in the goodness of people, but I remember reading something about deals like this being a scam. I remember the part about them sending you a lot of money, then having you give the rest to the shipper. Comments please.

Thanks guys. Why the fxxk would a "client" be involved anyway? And what's this guy called? tongue.gif A used-car-buyer-for-you?

Just wanted to check with you folks, cuz like I said, I read about this before but didn't pay much attention to it. However, I can say that the number of emails about the car (from various people) has greatly increased since after Thanksgiving (Christmas shopping I guess grin.gif). Lots of tire-kickers these days though.

Just forward to FBI internet fraud division.

This is what you can also do.

Reply that that is fine but you have a $100 administrative fee to cut a check. Have them Western Union the fee to you and say thanks.

Scam the scammers!

Should also say, then give the $100 to charity.

As ludicris as the letter sounds, this is a successful scam. Others in vogue now are the Nigerian Scam (help me get a couple of overlooked millions), and the foreign lottery scam, which one of my friends fell for.

If someone is asking for money so they can give you something free or earned, it's BO-GUS!

In person, and in real cash is about the only safe way to do stuff like this with large amounts of money. Money orders and cashiers checks are pretty safe but I've heard of those going bad too (like even calling the bank it was from, which was a fake phone number too, and them on that line saying it was good).

Though one time we delivered a tractor (1957 John Deere 720 high crop, diesel, pony start, all rebuilt etc) to a gentleman in Colorado. But he took us in town to his bank and got us a cashier's check, so that was safe.

this is a common scam. the check is no good. by the time the bank finds out u will be out your car and the money for the shipping. dont do it or insist he gives u a western union moneygram or a postal money order, something that is bulletproof. they tried it on me and i didnt go for it. good luck.

Notice the US Postal Service is not used so there can be no mail fraud.

That same guy has been trying to buy cars in the Grand Rapids, MI area, too---he is really concerned about if the engine has been serviced.

Wonder how many times they are successful?

Tom

I'm sure this is a legitimate deal -- but I can beat it by at least $1,000! Just send me a certified check for $5,000 (to offset the $11,000 check I'm going to send you later on) and then we'll make arrangements for my private transporter to pick up the Reatta/Allante/Mercedes/Yugo GT [select one]. Trust me, would I lie to you?

SCAM, SCAM, SCAM. One of the oldest in the book. Just a varient of the 'my client died and left 50 million in an African bank and in order to get it released you have to pretend to be his long lost heir. Just send me $15,000 in American funds so I can start the process, blah, blah, blah.'

Run, don't walk to the nearest FBI office.

My reatta is also in Autotrader and I've received at least 10 emails like yours. At first I was like you......and wanted to trust the good in people....thank god I have skeptical friends. I just ignore them now or play around a bit and tell them I want cash only and will not accept more than my asking price - never hear from them again. It turns out the certified check funds are available to you in 48 hours but 10 or so days letter the bank finds out it is fraud and you are responsible to refund the bank.

Yeah, it's funny they are always concerned about the last oil change and condition of paint....

I would have played them...

Told them "sure", the check is on its way, and to go to the local money-wire service to pick it up ... At least make them waste time on a dead-end 'lead' to frutstrate them a bit...

but, as everone here has implied, if this isn't a scam, then Buick will start making Reattas again in 2006...
