24T42
Well, you did real well with the top 10 vintage passenger engines. As I expected there were some excellent engines mentioned that could have made the list. Remember - lists are always subjective depending on who is making up the list. Well, I ran across another top 10 list today - the top 10 vintage car movies. Let's see if you can name all 10 on this list. I don't think so.

olcarherb
And my list: 10. Fast Charlie & the Moonbeam Rider (OK, so it's really a motorcycle movie...so sue me!!!) 9. Bullitt 8. American Grafitti 7. The Crowd Roars 6. The Big Wheel...starrring Mickey Rooney as the son of a dead, alcoholic '20s race car driver who takes up racing and partners with his father's old riding mechanic and current (for the time) - race car builder, played by Thomas Mitchell for a shot at Indy in the late '40s 5. K8096
I won't name 10, but a few good ones are "Speedy" a 1928 movie filmed on the streets of Manhattan with Harold Lloyd. Unbelievable street scenes with literally thousands of 1920's cars in the background. It's not available on DVD yet. Another one is one of the last silent films with Charlie Chaplin named "City Lights." It has a great chase scene with a Rolls Royce Picadilly roadster. The last one I'll mention is "Sunset Boulevard" with Gloria Swanson. Seeing a 23 year old Issota Fraschini on the streets of LA in 1950 is great. I think the scene where they pull up to the gates of Paramount Studios in the car is one the greatest movie scenes of all time.
1937hd45
Does anyone know the title of the silent movie that aired on the Discovery or History channel about the blacksmiths son turned race car driver? The old guy was dead set against automobiles and had a race horse, son went off to race cars. They used the Ford 999 racer, had early special effects with the car on fire and crashing. I did tape it, but can't find it.

Guest De Soto Frank
Was glad to see someone mentioned "Speedy" !I will suggest:1) Laurel & Hardy: "Two Tars" (c. 1929) - the boys are two sailors on shore leave who rent a car (Model T, of course ) and go for a drive, and get in the midst of a Grapes of Wrath type traffic jam, the end result being the total destruction of more than a few cars...2) "Excuse My Dust" - 1950(?) - the prop cars are a bit of a stretch, but the attitudes represented about the coming Automobile Age are a neat look at the past from a societal stand-point...(hope I didn't take all the fun out of the movie!) Plus there's Red Skelton !3) "It's a Mad, mad, mad [etc] World" - ('nuff said)4) "Those Magnificent Men and their Jaunty Jalopies" - Tony Curtis, Terry-Thomas and his "Nifty-Nine"...5) "Sooper-Hooper-Dyne Lizzies" - a mid-Twenties Keystone silent featuring radio-controlled(1924 !) Model T's doing all sorts of wild stunts.6) "They Drive By Night" - 'nother "slice-of-life" driving movie, although truck-based.7) "Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang"8) "Charlie and the Angel" - Disney, early-'60s, Fred MacMurray, William Demarest.9) "The Absent-minded Professor"10) "The Great Race"

Amphicar BUYER
A couple folks mentioned Vanishing Point (I agree). Next time you watch it at home. Do a stop frame of the scene where it runs into the D-9s. You will see not a Challenger, but a '69 Camaro! How hard does a car have to hit something to change it's DNA like that? You can't go wrong with Chitty chitty bang bang! Still a favorite of mine!
michel88
In "To Catch a Thief" Grace Kelly drives a blue 2 seat sports car that is being chased by a Citroen. Does anyone recognize what make this car is? It has a column shift. This must be a rare car, I can't remember seeing this before. I am guessing a Lancia? Shop Rat
"The Great Gatsby" had some beautiful cars in it. "Bonnie and Clyde", "The Sting", "Paper Moon", "Matewan" (one of our former members had his car used in that one)and the original "Cheaper by the Dozen" (the Pierce Arrow would only start and run for the father). I've been reading your forum and thinking about joining the AACA (I have a 1947 Cadillac 6207). As far as movies with a lot of interesting cars, my favorite for 1950's is Pleasantville.Dave

Guest De Soto Frank
Don't think it's the same movie..."The Seven-Ups" is a gritty cop movie, along the lines of "The French Connection"...I think the two bad guys that Schieder is chasing when he drives under the truck are the same baddies that plague Mel Gibson in "Mad Max"...Here's another obscure Disney movie with at least one neat car: "The Omega Connection"...from what I remember, the heroes are a couple of twenty-something guys who spend a fair amount of time eluding the bad guys (don't remember the reason) in a late '20s Morgan three-wheeler ! Guest brockway
OK, here's my list.1) "A Man and a Woman", 1966 (or Un Homme et une Femme. The best combination of music and cars ever)2) "Vanishing Point", 1971 (Cool movie. Can also encourage to bad driving habbits 3) "Le Mans", 1971 (though I haven't seen this film, it must be great)4) "Grand Prix", 1966 (Racing scenes are unbelievable. Great actors Yves Montand, Richard Garner and the one Japanese guy. Saw the film few weeks ago on TCM)5) "Ronin", 1998 (So far the last movie with authentic car chases?)6) "Man and Woman, 20 years later", 1986 (This movie is rubbish EXCEPT for the first five minutes. Maybe the best cars speeding ever catched on camera and Francis Lai's excellent music in the background) 7) "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", 1963 (Very funny film and large variety of cars to see)8) "Duel", 1971 (Directed by Steven Spielberg. Haven't seen this film yet)9) "The Blues Brothers", 1980 (great chase, greater pile-up)10) "The Italian Job", 1969 (Mini's everywhere, driving in the stairs, falling from the cliffs etc.)

Guest 52buick72r
This is a fun one. There are lots of good ones listed too. Here's my list.10 - "The Great Race", it would have been better if they used a Thomas Flier instead.9 - "American Graffiti"8 - "Vanishing Point"7 - "Dual"6 - "Bullitt"5 - "The Blues Brothers" - launching the RV was the best!4 - "Gone in 60 Seconds" (1973 edition - the remake should have been left where it started, on paper)My top three are really hard to pit against each other - they are just classics.3 - "Two Tars" - we know for sure one of the cars "eliminated" was a Buick.2 - "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" - sinking the convertible was a crime1 - "If I Had A Million" - W.C. Fields had a 10 to 15 minute clip in the middle of the movie. Him and his wife finally have their new car delivered, and it is promplty destroyed by a "road hog". Just then, they receive a check for a million from the main character. They take their million and buy up a used car lot (singled out was a used LaSalle) and proceed to drive all the "road hogs" off the road. The carnage that happens is just increadible.Other notable mentions include "Mad Max", "Cannonball Run", and "Smokey & the Bandit I (and possibly II, III stunk)". Shop Rat
I am currently watching an older Disney movie, "The Journey of Natty Gann" and there have been some really nice old cars in it.Downside is there is a scene where guys are standing around betting on a fight between a wolf and a dog where the dog gets killed. Yes, I know, it's only a movie. But real people still do this kind of thing with animals and call it a sport. But they would not climb into the same arena and let an animal tear them to shreds and let people bet on the outcome.
Dave@Moon
One movie not to be missed is Speedy (1928), an excellent silent comedy starring Harold Lloyd with a major cameo by Babe Ruth. The NYC street scenes are a real eye opener! The original The Love Bug (1968) has quite a few very rare sports cars in the race scenes. The rest of the series is pretty worthless (even as kid's movies). Also, if you have or rent the remake of The Italian Job (2002), don't miss the DVD extras. The mini-doc on the staging of the stunts is not to be missed (there's not one computer effect in the movie).
Oxnard Montalvo
It may not make the top ten, but "DEATH RACE 2000" is a outstanding black comedy. Death Race 2000Year: 1975Production: New WorldDirector: Paul BartelStarring: David Carradine, Simone Griffith, Louisa Moritz, Sylvester Stallone, Marry WoronovScreenwriter: Robert Thom, Charles GriffithBased on a story by Ib MelchoirIn this low-budget black satire about a car race across the USA in the year of 2000, the winner is the driver who kills the most pedestrians. "Frankenstein" (Carradine) - who has supposedly been in so many crashes that most of his body has been replaced with artificial parts - is the nation's favorite driver. The film's fast pace and lively ironies led many critics to judge it superior to Rollerball (1975), a much more expensive production about the use of brutal sports as an opiate for the masses. A cult classic, Death Race 2000 has been much imitated.
