Service A/C

I have 1990 Reatta. My AC & Heater seems to be working fine. Recentely the panel lights up with SERVICE A/C for a short time and than disappears. I am guessing that it is time for an AC charge. Anybody out there with some ideas?

My '88 does the same thing. I took it to a dealer who said everything in a/c system needed replacing, to the tune of $1,880.00.
I ran out of there.
An a/c specialist said everything was fine, no leaks and freon level was ok. However message still flashed on screen. Replaced a switch under hood, still no good. I can get into computer and clear codes , but code still pops up after a few days.

My '89 did the same thing. The warning came on when the engine temp was too hot. I replaced the low speed puller fan relay and now the engine runs cooler and the Service AC warning never comes on. I don't know if that was the fix or not, but it hasn't come on since.

My Service AC light would go on for short periods. But within a couple of seasons it came on and stayed on. At that point, my trusted service man recharged the system and the light hasn't come on since. He said the the sensor senses a less-than-normal pressure
and this sets the service-ac light on.
All,
If your system is low on freon (R-12), the light will come on when the sensor reads low pressure. This will vary based upon engine speed, outside temperature and just how much freon the system needs.
However, if the contacts in the wiring harness coming out of the compressor, or on the accumulator are dirty, they can cause the same thing--a light on your dash. To make sure you are not getting a false light, remove the connector at the compressor, and at the accumulator (the large silver cylinder on the passenger side, near the firewall). Spray both sides of the connection with WD-40 or an electrical contact cleaner available at any Radio Shack. Allow the connections to air dry, then reinstall.
IF the system is not low on freon, this should stop the light from coming on.
Joe

time for an a/c lesson. pay attention barney. the a/c system for the reatta is almost the same as the c/h body, (park avenue, lesabre, bonneville, olds 88,98), and is actually overpowered for the reatta. If your a/c doesn't freeze you, even in 100*+, it doesn't work right. mine does.

sorry about the break, but here's the lowdown on reatta a/c. 1. evaporatorleaks!! common problem on 87-95 buick, pontiac, cadillac, old c,h,e bodies. restricts air flow for the hvac system, and causes a freon leak. yes, "topping off" the freon temporarily fixes the problem, but is extremely environmentally incorrect, and eventually becomes a waste of money, as a slow leak turns into a big hole. usually caused by the fact that the evaporator is soaked in condensate. that blck goo that covers it is oil from the a/c system, whichn leads to the next subject.
