can anyone give me some insight on what kind of paint I should use to get the correct original look for my '56 olds two tone red and white. I don't like the look of base clear.I can do my own work and I'm wondering about using lacquer even with all the extra work involved.Any thoughts...pete

I used to own a '56 Olds and used it as a daily driver for about a year. Loved the car.

Go to one of the older, established PPG auto paint stores in your area. If you are lucky they will have Ditzler/PPG paint charts going back to 1956.

If that doesn't work, there is a company in San Diego selling lacquer paint over the internet. They have color charts for your car. All you need is the Ditzler/PPG number.

If you are a beginner, acrylic lacquer is the way to go. No deadly fumes, it is easy to apply, and (if you pick a solid, non-metallic color) very forgiving to spray and rub out.

Good luck. I sold my car, but I really wanted to put a two-tone coral red/turquise paint job on it. Gaudy but pure 50's.
