6Volt to 12Volt Conversion

Recommended Posts

I can't always find a hill to park on and I am getting a little old for pushing my 55 T-bird down the street to start it when the engine is hot. I want to convert it from the 6-volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground. I do not know all that entails. Besides a new battery and generator what else will I need to convert to accomplish this and not burn up my electrical system. Any assistance would be appreciated.

My Packard is 6v positive ground and a new starter made a world of difference in spinning the engine much faster. I have an 875CCA- cold cranking amp battery and it never runs out of juice.

A 6 volt alternator would probably do wonders for your car too.

"The Official 12-volt Conversion Guide" is available for $10 from Randy Rundle at Fifth Avenue Antique Auto Parts, 415 Court Street, Clay Center, Kansas 67432.

That being said, you're having a problem that should be able to be corrected. I'm in favor of finding and correcting it. A properly working six-volt should properly work. Didn't it get everyone to work on time prior to 1955? Vapor lock? Starter voltage? I don't know. I wouldn't make all the necssary 12-volt conversion until you've exhausted your local experts. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
