Guest
Is there a provision for band adjustment for the 4-Speed overdrive transmission (86) for a 3.8L front wheel drive? My car is an Olds (got no answer on the Olds forum) but I believe it is the same as the Park Ave.
Thanks
NTX5467
No. I seriously doubt there are any external/internal adjustments or any kind on those transmissions.
An old line Chrysler service manager told me one time, when I posed the question of the need to adjust them periodically, that he'd run them "loose" and run the "tight" with no difference in operation--provided they didn't slip.
There could well be an internal basic adjustment to keep the band from dragging when not applied (if indeed there is a band in there) but it's applied with fluid pressure and mechanical leverage. Considering how thin the friction material is on those bands and clutches, trying to get a little more life by adjusting them would be fruitless as the fluid pressure would do it anyway.
Maybe you just need to change the fluid/filter and put in some GM Automatic Transmission Conditioner?
Enjoy!
NTX5467
Guest
I will give that a shot. I don't think I mentioned on this post what it was actually doing, so maybe you could see if you recognize this condition. It shifts fine from first to second, but goes off to nowhere between second and third UNTIL I let off the gas. Then it engages and does not slip at all. I was also thinking the modulator valve (is that what its called?) but I would think it would have trouble shifting at all if that was the case.
The motor is knocking a little bit anyway, so I may just have to buckle down and yank the motor and tranny together out of my rustbucket parts car and drop them in. I was hoping to beat as much life as I can out of this one first, as I am forced to drive an S10 that is physically impossible to get over 60MPH until I put the Olds on the road. If you have any other ideas, please let me know.
Thanks.
