I have a 1917 Dart model E 1 ton truck that I've been working on off and on for a couple of years. I havn't been able to find a whole lot of information on it. So far all I have is a couple of photocopies of advertisments and a copy of a Buda engine co. book that has a little info about my engine. So far I've managed to overhaul the engine and rebuild the chassis to the point where i could start on the fenders and hood. When I tore the truck down, I had no info at all on it so when the fenders came off I stashed them out in the shed. Now that I at least have some little ad pictures to look at, I can see the fenders I have are not even close to what should be on the truck. Now my question is, does anybody know of anyone making fenders that are kind of universal for this type of vehicle? The rest of the truck is all built of commercial parts so I doubt Dart made the fenders themselves. Any help or information of any kind on this truck will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ed Topel

Ed,

Dont discount those fenders yet. I have seen some trucks of that era that used different types of fenders so they could be right for your truck. I am not going to say they are but I hate to see you find out later that you should have kept them. I will keep my eyes open at truck shows and see if I can find one to get a picture of.

Bob,

I can see where the original brackets were mounted on the frame. The fenders that I see in the ads I have look very similar to the ones on the 1917 Indiana truck on your web page. The fenders I have were probably on the truck since the twenties and I can guess why. The truck was supposed to have originally been used in a coal mine until 1951. It looks like the original fenders were fairly narrow and had no apron so the driver probably got hit with mud or rocks every time he turned the wheel. The fenders I have are way to wide and the steering arm off the gearbox hits the back edge. Plus the apron appears to be homemade or at least adapted from another fender. By the way, thats quite a project you have going. I'll have to keep checking your page to see how your coming along. Thanks for the reply, Ed
