1965 sedan?

If so, the engine was 1500cc and 53hp air cooled flat four.

The weight was: sedan 1609 lbs, and convertible was 1720

lbs.

Transmission would have been a 4 speed manual with a floor shift. No power steering, brakes, windows, airbags or other such frivolous things were available.

Wheelbase was 94.5 inches and overall length was about 160 inches.

Top speed was probably around 70mph on a good day, going down hill, with a strong wind at your back.

Numbers from a quick check of the Standard Catalog of Imported Cars 1946 - 2002, Krause publications.

Opinions from me.

Sorry to hear that 1926. I have a VW and sometimes I post some topics about VWs. Not all of us have the facilities to restore a larger more desirable car, like a Stutz or a Cadilac but none the less enjoy what we have.

We talk alot on this site about getting younger folks in AACA and I do believe cars like the Beetle are a great first restoration project for the person who wants to do the job themselves. The parts are for the most part inexpensive and available and the cars themselves are very drivable and dependable.

My 1956 Type I was restored by me, in my two car garage, under my house, except for the paint. It recieved a Senior award in 2003 at Carlisle.

I think I am a pretty good member of AACA, joined local chapter, go to all the AACA meets I can, and try to get the word out about what a great organization this is. I plan on restoring another car in the future, and unless the eary VWs come down in price most likely it will be something else.

If you will be going to the Central Fall meet in Dublin Ohio, look me up I will be in class 27B I'll show you my car. Maybe change your mind, who knows, you may want a VW after you get a good look at one.

Admittedly i spend most of the time checking whats going on with the

BCA forum plus the AACA tech and general forums...but i cannot remember

the last time i saw a posting about a VW Bug, so maybe 1926 is a bit hasty??!

All the guy wants is a bit of general help with his '65 specs for crying out

loud!!! Heck.... we even had an administrator divert to a more appropriate

forum and if HE is ok with it????? laugh.gif

Life is too short! But i may have chipped in 'cos i have a fully restored

'68 bug of my own... grin.gif

Trevor, It's true that there's not a Volkswagen-only forum, but that's not the only car mark without a specialized forum. This site has any number of different car forums to interest people worldwide, so with "1926" saying that he's.... "Tired of hearing about bugs and camaros" isn't really accurate. I also think that "Drummerboy" got some good answers about his "bug". Heck, I even had one in the 70's, but they don't like running without motor oil! Good job, guys! Hey I agree 25 years is not old. But you have to realize what the AACA guidelines are. So I think there is room for everyone here. Maybe the folks who own those "old" cars just arent into computers as much as us who have the newer vehicles.

If you have "undies" that old, you really need to get out of the garage a little more.

I often think that a 25 or a 30 year old car is not an antique (or whatever). And then I rememeber that when I started driving my Pontiac in 1959 it was only 29 years old. Between then and now I have had about fifteen or sixteen cars some older and some newer but my daily driver is still my Pontiac.

I think that everyone should get a parts book and a manual for any car that they own, also any books with published history of their particular car. Then I remember that it took me almost fourty years to accumulate the books that I have on my car plus all the books for the others that I have owned.

I wonder sometimes how come every body today dosn't know evrything about automotive mechanics that I thought I knew 45 years ago. And then I remember that we have more than a generation of people out there that were raised with cars that were never repaired at home so how would the learn anything about them.

God I'm getting old but not mellow.

I guess this year's Hershey day will be downright depressing when, finally, every last rear engined VW sold in the U.S. (except for the last two years of the flat-4 Transporter) is AACA eligible.

Next year, AACA Senior Chevy Citations!

Funny how nobody complains about old cars being too new when it's a Ferrari Boxer or a Land Rover in question. speechless-smiley-034.gif

No 1926, it is a sad day when a newcomer comes and askes a question about a car that AACA defines as antique and you give him greif. THat is what is really sad. I am just glad that the majority of AACA members are not like you or I for one would have nothing to do with AACA. I could care less about the majoirty of pre-1950 cars (with the exception of the Model A Fords) but I don't criticize someone for asking a question about them.

The guy asking the question has just as much right to ask about his 1965 Bug as you do your old car.

Yes I agree, this guy was poorly treated; seems like the moderator(s) might have spoken up, although what goes on behind the curtain is anyone's guess. This old car hobby can't grow by vomiting on newcomers.

I had a bunch of Beetles during the sixties and really liked them. I just got out my old Floyd Clymer book and learned something I never knew or even suspected, which must prove an old adage.

High gear on the Beetle transmission ratio is overdriven at .89:1. The final drive is 4.375:1. Never knew about the OD. Even with 40 horse, they delivered some semblance of acceleration with the lower rear axle yet gave thrift with the OD. Clever.

I thought I joined a club that recognized cars that were 25 or more years old. (A 1965 VW meets that criteria.)

That club is the AACA.

Obviously not everyone in the club likes all the same cars, for whatever reason.

That shouldn't preclude being helpful if one can be. Even if the question involved doesn't relate to your personal preferences in old cars.

drummerboy...Welcome and please post any questions you have.

BillP, klb, and, Air Cooled did a good job explaining the AACA's requirements.

The AACA welcomes all cars 25 years old minimum...you certainly qualify. Come to think of it, one does not even have to own a car to belong.

Hopefully, you will disregard any negative comments mentioned in responses to your thread. They certainly do not represent the 63,000+ members, guaranteed.
