any carb specialist out here?

Recommended Posts

I just put on my edelbrock 2x2 intake with adadptors from speedway motors to run 2 Lincoln carbs. the engine starts much eaiser and runs very well but seems to be missing at idle, have adjustted to lean best but its still missing. Vacuum was at 21hg with the single 2 and is now at 18 understandable with the 2x2 also runs a little rich, but so far it has acomplished my goal of making the engine run cooler. its dropped 40 degrees and stays around 165.

What I need to know is what the stock jets size is on the 48 carb and where I can get smaller ones to lean them out?

Thanks.

The standard size jets for post war V12 is .057". The main jets have almost no effect on idle mixture, This is controlled by the two idle screws and the position of the throttle plates. You can get smaller jets from Vintage Ford or Carbs Only in the LA area. You need to be careful about going too lean. I notice Vintage Ford has .051" and .046" along with the bigger .058". Before you swiched jets, I would try to set each carb independendly. Disconnect the linkage, now on one carb back off the idle speed control to close the throttle plates, turn the idle screws all the way in thus taking this carb out of action. Now adjust the other carb for mixture and a Slow" idle speed. Note the setting! Now do the same with this carb as you did with the first one taking it out of action. Adjust the first carb as you did with the other. Return the second carb back to its settings. you should now be able to fine tune this setup while the connecting linkage is still off. The connecting linkage is critical and must be set so that both throttles on the carbs are closed against the speed control screws and nothing changes in speed or smoothness from what you were able to attain when the carbs were not connected. You might also want to set the pump stroke in the middle hole or even the first( short stroke) hole as long as the engine dosen't stubble on quick acceleration. The vacuum chacteristics have changed slightly and you may need to adjust the vacuum brake on the distributor a tad. Have fun!

Thanks Peecher, I got the carbs adjusted and a new linkage rod installed and what a wakeup for this Lincoln V12. it runs like a whole new motor. guess the $50 for the edelbrock intake and carbs was worth it 7 years ago before I even owned a Lincoln. Thanks Rolf for the other Lincoln O6H carb, runs so much better than when I had the pair of 97s on it.

See you in Sonora on Saturday. Thats the only day I will be able to make it.
