Steering column gap

Guest

Recommended Posts

My 64 Sport wagon steering column has quite a substantial gap between the wheel and the blinker collar. If I push on the wheel with the nut removed the gap closes. From what I can determine the threaded stalk that holds the steering wheel nut pulls out as the nut is tightened down and thus increases the gap. It drives nice and tight and steers fine and there is no other play (such as side to side) in this column. But obviously this in not the way this unit was meant to be-plus it just looks plain bad. Any help in solving this mystery would be greatly appreciated. Greg

Greg, where the column goes thru the firewall in the engine compartment there is a split clamp with a 7/16 inch nut & bolt. Loosen that bolt and loosen the two bolts that hold the steering column to the dash and you should be able to take up the slack. I had a problem with one of mine and that worked for me. The split clamp is about 8 inches from the firewall........
