Door handle question

Hi,

I have a problem with the passenger side door on my 1992 regal 4 door. I can open the door from the inside but not from the outside. I took the door panel off and have determined what the problem is, but am not sure how to fix it. The rod attached to outside handle does not extend down far enough when the handle is pulled upward. As a result, there is a spring loaded lock that does not release the catch (the part that engages the striker on the door post). I've tried adjusting the rod to lenghten it, but at the maximum adjustment, it's still not quite enough. I am thinking about going to the hardware store to get a coupler and a threaded rod of the same diameter to try to lengthen the rod further, but I thought I should check around first to see if others have had this problem and how they fixed it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think there is a plastic spacer that belongs there, thats why you see the rod as being too short, many of those type parts may be found at auto parts stores on those HELP brand racks.
