radio antenna

I had the antenna mast on an 89 Reatta busted and was wondering if it an easy job to replace the mast, or do I need to take the motor out to replace. Can I replace with a fixed antenna and unplug the motor?

Thanks,

John

I don't think the Masts are available any more, Barney Eaton, as mentioned has been rebuilding them. The main failure is the nylon regulator ribbon connected to the top mast piece. They typically break off and the motor won't shut off.

It's possible to install a fixed mast, you may have to hunt to find the right adaptor for the Antenna Co-ax, but it can be done.

If you check in on eBay what's offered there as the "Aftermarket" replacement is basically junk. I put one in (made in Mexico/bought from GM) and it only lasted about a year.

Antennas are available from GM new, I believe the price is close to $200.

If you break or bend either of the two lower sections, on a 1988-1990 there are few options. The mast for the 1991 is still available. You cannot use a 1991 mast in an earlier assembly.

I sell new Delco power antennas for $50.00, I also rebuild antennas for $50.00

If you have broken or bent the lower section, the easiest thing to do is send me the entire assembly. Because.........

The power antennas I have do not have the threaded section that goes through the fender, I (you) must remove that from the original antenna and install it on the new antenna. This is not a huge operation if you know what you are doing.....but you could damage the new antenna making the change.

Also the new antenna (that I have) does not have the 16" coax like the original. You must purchase a short jumper from Radio Shack. Otherwise they look identical.

See picture. New antenna at top. Original antenna on bottom (relay missing on antenna in picture)
