55PACKARD
Can I install an edelbrock 600/650 cfm on our stock intake manifold?
52deluxe
i am willing to bet u will need a adapter plate. i think when i was having carb troubles i had checked to see if i could get a edelbrock/holly carb that would fit my intake and needed a adapter to do so. this was because the carter mounting holes in the intake were different then the modern carbs, they had one in the catalog that would work with my straight 8. try autozone or someplace and make them dig out the books, i dont see why this could not be done fairly easy.just a thoughttom
55PACKARD
So know one else ever tried do a carb swap? Well i'm going to be trying soon because my carb is spilling gas all over the place and i want to go with a little bigger cfm. Any ideas if this will work
WCraigH
Re: "spilling gas all over the place" sounds like a float or needle/seat problem that should be readily fixed.WRT more CFM: The usual answer is Edelbrock Performer (nee Carter AFB). But make sure (1) you modify the throttle bores in the intake manifold, i.e., bore out at a machine shop to the AFB size (this alleviates the adapter which is a POS) and (2) you get the (more expensive) 2nd-ary adjustable air-valve type because your heavy Packard will not take kindly to sudden full throttle application without same.Of course you'll have to deal with (1) throttle linkage issues, not the least of which is the T-U adjustment, (2) vacuum connection to the distributor, (3) fuel line from fuel pump, (4) etc.Somewhere in my computer, I have the CFM ratings of the 4GC and WCFB carbs, but they are less than the "modern" AFB-types. WCraigH
One more thing: you'll have to change the air filter assembly since the air horn ring diameter is different. This is turning into a PITA, nes paus?
MBL
When I first put my Rochester 4GC on....it was spewing gas all over. The needle and seat setup(to me)seems like a bad design or at least prone to hanging up. There is a wire like clip that holds onto the needle and if its not just right it will hang up and not let the needle close all the way. I just opened mine up and bent the clip a bit so it would slide into this slot that you will see when you open it. Real easy and you will notice it right away. I would definately do that before buying another carb.TimMBL
55PACKARD
Sounds like it is turing into a project but i hope to get it to work since the edelbrock carb is a nice carb.I have had them on other cars and i love them so it might be worth it to adapt it to my Packard..One ? though if i leave the linkage the way it is and make it fit onto the new carb will it be ok..And i will probably need a spacer plate i knew that and i will have to make the air filter fit because i love the way it looks <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />..Well i might need some help here then???
