Exhaust Sound

Does anyone know the sound difference between Dyna-Flow and a Flow Master muffler? Specifically, which one will give a lower tone. My origional catalitic converter is still in good shape so I won't be replacing that. I'd like to get close to the sound of a throaty V8 yet I know its virtually impossible with a V6. For sure, I don't want the high tech sound of souped up honda, toyota or eclipis.

John,

Not too many conversions to these low restriction mufflers being done. I don't have my Reatta Binder with me today to be able to give you any specifics. I had an all stainless muffler put on several years ago/ the name eludes me-It had a very nice mellow tone-something like "Brilliant Stainless" When I did all the Engine work last year I replaced all that with a 2 and a 1/2" system including a Hi-Flo Cat and (I think) a Dyna-Flo Muffler. It's quite, er, a... fairly loud!

Maybe post this question on a Camero or Grand Prix Site, might be a broader experience there...

I saw your picture of the underside or your car under "Thinking Warm on a cold Winter's Day", and really like the looks. This is my spring project or better said, I plan to have a muffler shop do the work as soon as the weather breaks. I just which I could hear the sound difference (if any) between the two mufflers.

If you put a glass-pack in the straight section after the converter, that can help quiet and mellow the tone. A good, unrestricted glass-pack will not affect the flow. Different types of mufflers remove different frequencies, I am sure there are books somewhere on this.

The last one I did was a 350 V8 Chevy van... dual exhaust, running through a 24 inch glasspack then a turbo style muffler, 2 1/2 pipes and the tone would please your grandmother.

A side note...Harry will remember this, the turbo muffler was designed for the Corvair turbo engine. It was said to be designed to limit the exhaust flow on the upper end so as to limit the turbo turbine speed. Hot Rod magizine did a test of mufflers, both factory and aftermarket designs and using a big cubic inch engine (don't remember if it was a Chevy or Ford) the turbo muffler outperformed all others, the big heavy factory Hemi muffler can in second.

Just a side note, the Corvair turbo had its boost limited by the 1 bbl carb, not the exhaust. Chocking the exhaust (e.g. with a potato) is really not a good idea & mufflers tend to deform significantly.

One of the sweetest sounds I've ever heard is a warmed over Corvair with trombones and not much else.

I replaced my muffler only with Flowmaster that fits Camero that has single inlet with dual outlet and cut the black deflector on back and ran pipes out on each side and installed dual tips with resinators. Sort of loud on start up but has nice mellow sound wink.gifat 65-70 down road, not loud at all and you can still hear the radio cool.gif.

The Quote (and the Pic) I think you're referring to is my '88 Betsy Blue. I don't find the exhaust note offensive, but some might. At 75 to 80 mph the Db reduces substantially. With my Manual Tranny gear ratio I'm turning about 2600 rpm at thar rate of speed.

I'd take a wild guess and say #80. When the System was installed/ new ('91 2 and 1/2" pipe) Cat. and rear Tailpipe work they screwed up. When I picked it up from the Shop they commented it seemed quite loud. I drove a couple of days and then had it up on stands to do something or other and got looking at the tailpipes, what they'd done was Criss-Cross inlet/ outlet on the business end of the muffler. I think it looked too tight to them to get the the inlet pipe so they connected that to the outlet on the passenger side and bent a tailpipe to connect to the Inlet to the muffler.

The consequence was a basically straight through inlet to outlet to the Driver's side outlet tailpipe and some baffling for the other tailpipe. To make a long story "Short" I redid the work in Louisiana last Summer. Really didn't make very much difference getting it piped properly and since this was done the Muffler had to be rolled over and the detail stamping is now on top/ can't be seen.
