Glass replacement

Hey Guys,

This is my first visit here. What a great site!

About a month ago, I took all my original rollup windows, front & rear vents, and both windshield pieces to a local glass shop to have new recut. Picked it up, paid $400, and unwrapped it at home. To my surprise, none of the pieces were exact fits for the pattern glasses, none of the edges were polished (even those that will be exposed after installation) and there are several chips at the edges, including a half incher on the top edge of a rear rollup. Is laminated glass that hard to cut and finish? These people are reputable in town, but then I have never had them cut glass for an old car. Anybody have any experience with this sort of problem? I need some knowledge before I go talk to them. Thanks

REPOSTED FROM: it sounds like your local guy guessed on the size. antique auto glass is CT, can ship it for less.

AUTO GLASS

i did all four windows in my 1950 buick.

the first window took about two weeks to get right, the other three were done in a week!

start on a back window, the one door you look at the lease! That will be your starter window.

take a door apart, and match each piece with the new channel. The horiz. window fuzz that is at the bottom of the glass is stapled on, but I had to buy heavy duty staples and drill on a small hole thru the fuzz for the staple legs, and then bend them over with a pair of plyers.

It's not hard, just takes some time.

It's the "clips" that hold the felt on the door that is the problem. You need to reuse the old clips. The old clips were "shot" on to the old channel with thick staples, (buick that is), so some people glue them together, or use pop rivits. You need to use the smallest rivits you can find.

I when to autozone and got an $8 rivit gun with assorted rivits. It had the 1/16" size, so i ended up buying three rivits guns.

There are plenty of packard guys at Hershey, do your self a favor and buy a window channel kit from these guys and then you will not come up short. My buick kit was $120.

I'm happy with the job, for my first time.

Tiretracks-this is absolutely unacceptable. I have had a local shop cut lots of laminated (safety) glass for me. It always comes back with smooth, polished, non chipped edges. Take it back and have them do it again or get your money back.

Sounds like what you have is worthless junk and should go back to be done over and done right or you should demand a refund. If they could not do it right they should have told you to take it someplace else. If they don't want to take care of the problem get mad and stand your ground. We need quality work and to many people will just make do with poor quality because thats all we get sometimes. People need to take a little pride in the job they do for a change.

Let us know how you come out.

Bob

Thanks for the support and information guys. Yesterday I went back to the glass shop with digital photos of the flaws and talked to the manager. He said he had not seen the glass before it was wrapped and agreed it was a crappy job. Said he would redo everything and get "the right guy" to do it this time. I delivered the bad glass along with the originals to him this morning. Now I wait and hope he comes through. I told him that if he didn't think they could deliver I would rather have my money back, and he assured me they could do it right. I'll let you know how it ends up. Jerry
