During the Great Depression to get gas cars were cut down an used as trucks, this was common in farming areas, I have a title for a 31 that is registered as a truck.
To get gas, and that is the reason why

Seaton, if you look on the firewall it should have a tag just to the right of the oil can holder on the passenger side. You will see the car specs, make/model. Yours should say for the model 28-something. Let me know what that number is and I can tell you what it started out to be. I agree that it did not start life as a pickup. Was this the car listed on ebay a couple of days ago?
John
1928, model 29 (Town Brougham)
