Jyrki
The straigth 8 engines had 2 sets of oil control piston rings = 4 ring grooves total. Has anyone ever tried running with one set of oil rings only?
Guest
I have only questions.<P>Why did they run two oil control rings? Was it because of poor oil ring technology? Was it because of loose fitting pistons?
Guest
The Buick Factory- Engineered ring set used a "U" flex lower oil ring. It had very low "drag".I am not sure, but years ago, long stroke engines used two oil rings Could it be that it was because of the lengthened stroke? Anyhow,if you use Buick "Factory-Engineered" rings, you WILL be happy with them.I once watched a mechanic put highly-touted "scraper"ring in an older Buick, and he lost 10 M.P.H from top-end speed. Jyrki
Thanks for the info. My original pistons had these U-shaped oil control rings in both grooves, while the set from Buick Specialists is made by Grant Piston Rings, and features a modern 3-piece set with an expander ring for the upper groove, and a U-shaped ring for the lower groove.
